Hey Rack shoppers! Nordstrom is wide open now, but if you want to learn how to save money while shopping Rack, we’ve got you covered!
Nordstrom Rack is trying to right-size their inventory by holding a ridiculously massive sale, following in the footsteps of rival discount department stores Ross, Burlington, and TJMaxx.
Several dozen Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores opened on May 12, and by May 21, nearly 100 will be open. And returning in-store customers are being welcomed back with across-the-board discounts — for a week only.
Here’s what you need to know:
Stores are reopening with 40% off storewide — for one week.

Everything in the store is on sale — but it only lasts for a week.
Stores in Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Oklahoma reopened on May 12, and the storewide sale in those stores ran until May 19.
The next batch of store reopenings will have sales May 21 – 28.
The 40% off applied at checkout to everything — including clearance items.

That’s a better discount than the much-loved Clear the Rack sales, which take 20% off clearance prices. The 40% off discount is applied at checkout.
All sales are final — unless you opt out of the discount.

That means you can’t return anything you get for 40% off. You can opt out of the discount if you’re not entirely sure you’ll want to keep what you buy. Just let the cashier know as you check out; this can be done item by item.
Prepare to save 50% on retail prices, at the very least.

At worst, Nordstrom Rack prices are 20% cheaper than retail price. With the extra 40% off from the storewide sale, that’s 52% off retail — minimum. But since clearance items are included in the sale, savings of 80% are totally common.
One Texas-based Poshmark reseller tweeted about how she found black designer jeans for $15 (reg. $228) — that’s 93% savings.

There’s not an influx of new clearance items.

A Texas Rack employee told us that the number of clearance items was “about normal,” although staff did make “some additional markdowns.”
Stores are reopening May 21 in 14 states.

In addition to the 32 stores already open, Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack will reopen 62 more stores in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah, and British Columbia in Canada on May 21. Additional stores are opening up in Tennessee, as well.
That’s 94 of the 117 total Nordstrom stores in operation. (Although by the end of 2020, Nordstrom plans to close 16 locations, leaving 101.)

Don’t want to go to the store? Online clearance is up to 90% off.

Nordstrom Rack has more than 35,000 items listed in their online clearance section, with discounts of up to 90% off “comparable value.” Just sort by “best value” to find the deepest discounts.
Now, as we say in our Nordstrom Rack hacks article, “comparable value” means that’s the price at which some other store sold a similar product. It’s not necessarily the going retail price.
I found a V-neck sweater from Free People for $25.60 — 80% off the comparable price of $128.00.
