As with many people these days, my smartphone has become a huge part of my life. I use it for everything from playing games to sharing cute family photos with friends and even accessing work files while I’m on the go. However, it has always bothered me that there has never been an easy way to transfer files and photos between my phone and my computer unless I pay for a cloud service. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case, thanks to a new app: Pushbullet.

What is Pushbullet?

Pushbullet is a mobile app that makes it easy to transfer items such as notes, photos, reminders, links, addresses and notifications between your smartphone and your computer. Pushbullet also allows users to push these items to friends, as well.

How does it work?

Once you’ve downloaded the Pushbullet app to your phone and your desktop using their Windows Desktop App, Chrome extension or Firefox extension, you’re free to start pushing. With one click you can push items between your devices, as well as to other Pushbullet users. The pushed items will show up as notifications and will be waiting for you on your other device!

How is Pushbullet helpful?

When I first heard about Pushbullet, I didn’t think that I would use this app, but I soon realized that this was an app that I never knew I needed! Photos are a great example. Like many people, I use my phone to snap a lot of photos when I’m out and about. After all, you never know when your child is going to strike an adorable pose! I always found it annoying that there was no way to instantly access those photos on my computer without using a cloud service, which can cost anywhere from $5 to $50 a month! With Pushbullet, simply click on that photo and push it to your computer, where it will be waiting for you in your notification tray!

Use it for shopping and more

You can also use it to send shopping lists and recipes from your computer to your phone so you have easy access to them while you’re shopping. And if you think of something while you’re out that you don’t want to forget, simply put it in a note and push it to your computer. You can also send links, files and even addresses to your phone, where you can easily launch Google Maps without having to look up the address again. If you’ve been paying for a cloud service every month for the convenience of accessing all of your photos and files on all of your devices, this app may make you reconsider those services. Although they won’t automatically sync to your devices, one push may save you quite a few bucks!

What else can it do?

If you’re using an Android device, you have access to one of Pushbullet’s coolest features: mirror notification. If you choose to enable this system, this feature will mirror the notifications from your phone onto your desktop, meaning you’ll never miss another notification—even if you don’t have your phone handy! Any notification that you receive on your phone will automatically show up in your notification tray on your computer, making it even easier to manage your daily communications. This feature is currently only available for Android devices—at least for now.

What devices does it work on?

Pushbullet, which is free to download and use, is currently available for both Android and Apple devices and works with Chrome and Firefox on your computer. Pushbullet also offers a Windows Desktop app that can be utilized on PCs.
