This time of year there are bound to be fresh strawberries in our fridge. Krazy Couponers save big by purchasing fruit in season, so pick up pints and pounds of berries at farmers markets, fruit stands or in the grocery store on super sale with a discount. But don’t dread the next step when staring at several pounds of berries and don’t dare let them go to waste. This tip is one of my favorites. Prepare perfectly hulled strawberries using an item already in your kitchen cabinet — a simple, disposable drinking straw!
Rinse the berries under cold water with the caps still on. Pat them dry with a paper towel, or use a salad spinner. Dry quickly!
The Fun Part
Insert the drinking straw into the bottom point of the strawberry and push it all the way up through the fruit and out the top. The stem will pop off as the straw pushes out the top. Discard the white, bitter core of the berry along with the stem. The berry is left intact! Use the same straw for all the berries.
I can hand the straws to my kids, and they can have a blast. Even my 3-year old-can help! Hmm, now what to do with all those berries….
