Soft Pretzels

2 1/2 cups flour – $0.49
1/2 tsp salt – $0.01
1 tsp sugar – $0.01
2 1/4 tsp instant yeast – $0.16
1 cup of warm water
3 Tbsp melted butter – $0.20

1/2 cup warm water
2 Tbsp baking soda – $0.01
3 Tbsp melted butter – $0.20
Coarse salt or cinnamon and sugar

1. Mix first six ingredients together until well combined. Knead dough by hand or in a machine for 5 minutes until dough is soft and smooth.

2. Lightly flour the dough and place it in a plastic bag. Close the bag but leave some air in to allow the dough to expand. Let rest for 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 500 degrees.

4. Prepare two baking sheets by lining with parchment paper. Remove dough from bag and separate into 8 equal pieces on a lightly floured surface. Let pieces rest while you mix 1/2 cup warm water with 2 tbls baking soda in shallow bowl. Stir until soda dissolves.

5. Roll each piece of dough between the palms of your hands until long and skinny (about 30 inches long). Twist dough into pretzel shape and dip into baking soda wash. The wash allows the pretzel to brown on top and gives it that “pretzel” flavor. Place on parchment and continue until each pretzel has been formed.

6. Let pretzels rest ten minutes, then bake uncovered 8 minutes or until golden brown. Remove pretzels from oven and brush with butter. Sprinkle with salt or cinnamon and sugar and serve!
