What Is the Metal Rack for in the Instant Pot?

instant pot metal roasting rack with diagram

The metal trivet that comes with your Instant Pot is meant to help you roast meat or vegetables directly in the pot. This method helps to keep your meal away from any liquid or grease in the bottom of the pot. To use it, put the rack inside the larger metal pot and place the food you want to roast on top of the rack. As the food cooks, grease, fat, and oils will fall to the bottom of the pot, leaving your meat or veggies cooked on top of the rack.

The trivet has two metal hinges on the sides, which can help you lift the rack (with your cooked food) out of the main pot.

What Should You Not Put in an Instant Pot?

  • Plastic: Because the Instant Pot cooks food at such high temperatures, any plastic items you put in it will melt. Not only will it ruin your plastic dish, but the food inside won’t be safe to eat anymore either.
  • Wax paper: Wax paper is not oven-safe and is made with a waxy plastic coating, so it is not safe to put in the Instant Pot. You can, however, use foil.
  • Non-tempered glass: Tempered glass is made to withstand high heat. It’s the only kind of glass you can put in the Instant Pot. Tempered glass bowls, dishes, and Mason jars that are marked oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe are safe to use in the Instant Pot.
  • Pyrex dishes: While many Pyrex products fit the categories listed above, the brand has recommended against using their products in pressure cookers. Their glassware is not made to withstand that much pressure, so the bowls and dishes are likely to crack or break while in the Instant Pot.
  • Anything without the pot: Never place food or liquid in your Instant Pot without the metal pot in place. If you take the pot out to clean it, return it to the machine right away to avoid a mishap that could ruin its heating device.
