After we put Halloween costumes in storage and start to thaw our Thanksgiving turkeys, it means one thing — it’s almost time to watch A Christmas Story! It’s tradition to watch it a bunch of times before the holidays, and just in time for Christmas 2022, we’re getting a sequel. Get your hot chocolate and blankets ready; A Christmas Story 2 is happening, and we’ll tell you how to watch it for free. (And no, we aren’t talking about the straight-to-video 2012 “sequel.”)
First we got Hocus Pocus 2, and now this — nostalgia lovers are winning in 2022. On Nov. 17, 2022, we’re getting a head start on the holidays with A Christmas Story Christmas, and we’ll see the original actor return to fill his shoes as the beloved Ralphie.
Obviously, he won’t be the rambunctious kid we once knew; he’ll be an adult back to his old stomping grounds to give his kids some Christmas cheer and catch up with Randy, Scut Farkus, and some other familiar faces.
You’ll have to catch this (and the original A Christmas Story) on the subscriber-based HBO Max, but we’ve got ways to watch A Christmas Story 2 for free.

HBO axed free trials in December 2020, but if you have AT&T Wireless, you can watch A Christmas Story 2 for free. HBO Max is included with their Elite, Plus, Plus Enhanced, Choice, Choice II, Choice Enhanced, and Premium Unlimited plans. If you have any of these, you’ll get to watch A Christmas Story 2 for no cost.
To sign in to HBO Max with AT&T (or any participating phone provider), do this:
- Go to HBOMax.com or open the HBO Max app
- Click sign in with provider
- Click AT&T
- You’ll get redirected to the Cricket website
- Log in with your AT&T details
- You’ll get redirected back to HBO Max, where you’ll be signed in
You can also watch the sequel if you have Cricket Wireless.
The phone provider offers a free subscription to HBO Max with their $60 Unlimited phone plan. If you’re already paying for Cricket, this is a free perk you’ll want to use.
To log in, use the same instructions as Verizon, but you’ll get redirected to the Cricket website instead. Sign in with your Cricket credentials and enjoy A Christmas Story 2.

You can always watch a 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story on TBS and TNT.
Since ’97, TNT has aired back-to-back showings of A Christmas Story for an entire day. The 24-hour marathons are a tradition, and if you have cable or a live TV subscription, you can catch it on TBS and TNT on Dec. 24, 2022.
Last year the marathon kicked off on TBS at 8 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET on TNT. Based on history, we expect it to start at the same time in 2022.
And the first movie is available on HBO Max to stream whenever you want.
You can’t watch A Christmas Story 2 with your HBO Max add-on with Hulu or Prime Video.
If you have Hulu or Prime Video, you might think you can watch A Christmas Story 2. Well, we’ve got bad news — you can’t. You can watch HBO Originals like The Sopranos, but you can only watch stuff exclusive to HBO Max on the HBO Max app.
A Christmas Story Christmas is one of those exclusives, so you can’t watch it through the app add-ons.
