Heads up, college students! If you haven’t yet signed up for an Apple Music student discount, now is definitely the time. You’ll get a free pair of Beats by Dr. Dre wireless earphones — plus some other sweet freebies — when you register for a subscription now.
So how do you score these freebies? And how much is the monthly price after the Apple student discount? We’ll break the Apple Music student discount down for you.
What is the Apple Music student discount?
Apple has a nice perk for students who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting university or college. As long as you can verify your status as a college student (you’ll need access to a valid college email address), you’ll get 40% off the regular price of an Apple Music streaming subscription. Here’s what the discount looks like in 2022:
- Apple Music Student Plan: $5.99 per month
- Apple Music Individual Plan (non-student): $9.99 per month
Keep in mind that you can only get the discounted rate for up to 48 months. You’ll also need to reverify your student status at the end of each year. Once your 48 months are up, you’ll automatically get enrolled at the individual plan price.
Where do I sign up?
Go to the Apple website to launch the Apple Music app (or iTunes), then click the link to “Verify Eligibility.” That’ll launch the website of Apple’s third-party provider, UNiDAYS, where you’ll select your institution and enter your college email address. They’ll send you an email where you can verify your account and complete the process.
Here’s how to get your free Beats earphones with the Apple Music student discount.
If you’ve subscribed to any tier of the Apple Music subscription plan in the past — student or otherwise — unfortunately, you won’t get the free Beats earphones.
But if you’ve never signed up before, you’re in luck! You’ll be eligible to receive the free pair of Beats Flex earphones (reg. $49.99 at Walmart and $69.95 at Amazon) once you make your first Apple Music payment. (This happens after any free trial period ends.)
You don’t need to do anything after that. Apple will email you instructions on how to redeem your offer online. You’ll have to redeem the offer within 90 days or it expires.
Read the full Apple terms and conditions about the offer here.
Does this offer expire?
Most definitely. Apple made the special Beats freebie available to student subscribers starting on June 22, 2022. The “limited time” lingo makes us think it’s best to hurry!
Will I get any other freebies with the Apple Music student plan?
For a limited time, the Apple Music student subscription also comes with free access to Apple TV+, their paid movie and streaming service (reg. $4.99/month).
Can you get the Apple Music student discount in high school?
That’s a nope. Apple says “you must be a student studying a bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, or equivalent higher education course” at a university or college to sign up for an Apple Music student subscription.
Apple Music vs. Spotify: Which student discount is better?
If you’re just comparing the price tag, Apple Music and Spotify have the exact same pricing for their student subscriptions ($4.99/month).
But the price of a regular Spotify subscription ($9.99/month) is higher than Apple Music’s regular price ($5.99/month), so the Spotify student discount is actually better.
Plus, the Spotify student subscription includes extra perks like free Hulu with ads (reg. $6.99/month) and free SHOWTIME (reg. $10.99/month).
