While the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down Uber’s ridesharing, their Uber Eats food delivery service took off.
We’re getting all kinds of things delivered these days, and pretty soon, that’s going to include beer, wine, and spirits.
Here’s what you need to know:
Uber is buying alcohol delivery service Drizly.
They’re paying $1.1 billion for it, and not that long after buying rival meal delivery service Postmates.
Using the Drizly app and website, customers in 1,400 cities order alcohol directly from wine and liquor stores.
Uber is planning to integrate Drizly’s marketplace into the Uber Eats app, and will also keep the Drizly standalone app going.
Drizly delivery could get cheaper under Uber.
Drizly has required customers to place a minimum order of $20, and delivery costs $5 per order plus a $1.99 service fee.
Uber Eats, on the other hand, charges $3.99 per delivery, and a 15% service fee. And all Uber deliveries are free with the $9.99/month Uber Eats Pass.

If you’ve never used Uber Eats before, you’ll want to sign up and get to know how it works. Here’s what you do:
- Sign up for a free Uber Eats account.
- Put in the promo code EATS-JOANIED156UI in the Account/Promotions section in the app.
- Use the $7 off your first order credit.
You’ll probably be able to use Uber gift cards on Drizly deliveries.
We’ve enjoyed using Uber gift cards on Uber Eats deliveries, and since Drizly is going to be integrated into the Uber Eats app, there’s a good chance that those gift cards will apply to alcohol deliveries.
