America’s military families can save on commercial air transportation through a number of programs designed to reward our military families for their service. Most of these are not advertised well or sometimes not at all, so you need to ask (and possibly ask again) for a military discount when making your reservation. Like all special prices, savvy KCL travelers know to compare the lowest military fare with the lowest possible airfare. Sometimes there’s a special fare that beats all discounts. Below are a few of the military discounts programs for airfare currently offered:

1. Veterans Advantage Program.  If you travel a lot (or have a large family), it might make sense to invest in a Veteran’s Advantage Card. This card, offered to active US military personnel, veterans and their dependents, costs $60/year, but it qualifies you for a host of discounts. Among these is a 5 percent off of airfare with United Airlines. Other travel companies that offer discounts to Veterans Advantage cardholders include Amtrak, Carnival Cruise Line, Thrifty Rent-a-Car and Choice Hotels.

2. American Airlines Military Discount.  American Airlines offers military discounts to active military personnel and their families as well as relaxed advance purchase requirements, access to preferred seating and preferential boarding privileges. Call American at 800 433-7300 for more information.

3. Delta Airlines Military Discount. Delta Airlines offers unpublished discount airfares to active military personnel and their dependents. These discounts are only available by calling or visiting a Delta reservation office, not online or via a travel agent. Call Delta at 800 221-1212.

4. Southwest Airlines. Southwest also offers military discounts to active military personnel and their families. These discounts are only available by contacting Southwest directly, not online, via a travel booking site or through your travel agent. Call Southwest at 800 I FLY SWA.

All of these discounts require you to show a valid military ID.
