Holiday Spice Apple Crisp

3 lbs. apples (your favorite variety) – $2.66
Zest of 1 orange, grated – $0.33
Zest of 1 lemon, grated – $0.30
2 Tbsp freshly-squeezed orange juice
2 Tbsp freshly-squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup white sugar – $0.15
2 tsp cinnamon – $0.18
1 tsp nutmeg – $0.09

Topping

1 1/2 cups flour – $0.14
3/4 cup white sugar – $0.23
3/4 cup light brown sugar – $0.27
1 cup oatmeal – $0.16
2 sticks cold butter, diced – $0.48

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9″x13″ pan with cooking spray.

2. Peel, core and cut the apples into large wedges. In a medium bowl, combine the apples with the zests, juices, sugar and spices. Pour into prepared dish.

3. To make the topping, combine the flour, sugars, oatmeal and cold butter in the bowl of an electric mixer or with a pastry cutter. Mix until the mixture is crumbly and the butter is approximately the size of peas. Scatter evenly over apples.

4. Place the crisp on a sheet pan and bake for one hour, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. Serve warm with ice cream and caramel.
