Online grocery shopping at one of the hundreds of Walmart grocery pickup locations is a good way to save time and money.

Why? Picking up your Walmart grocery order is always free! There are Walmart grocery pickup coupons, online digital rebates, and even ways to get freebies and cash back from your purchase.

1. Use Walmart Grocery Pickup promo codes for new customers.

There are a few active Walmart promo codes for $10 off a $50 Walmart grocery pickup order for first-time customers.

Get a unique coupon code when you sign up for Walmart Grocery Delivery, or use one of the following Walmart grocery coupon codes:

Use code WOWFRESH to save $10 on first $50 order
Use code SAVETIME to save $10 on first $50 order

2. Or use these Walmart Grocery Pickup promo codes for existing customers.

Walmart is stingy about giving coupon codes to existing customers. The only way to get a Walmart promo code as an existing customer is to refer a friend to place their first order.

Send your unique referral link, and your friend can use it to get $10 off their first order of $50 or more. Then, you’ll get a $10 credit in your account.

3. Checkout 51, Fetch Rewards, (and now, Ibotta!) have rebates for Walmart pickup orders.

Checkout 51

Checkout 51 accepts all itemized grocery pickup and e-receipts from any retailer as proof of purchase.

There’s some confusion on their website — they say they don’t accept most e-receipts, but also that you can redeem Checkout 51 offers with Walmart Grocery Pickup — but we found out on 4/23/2020 that, “for the time being,” Checkout 51 is accepting all e-receipts for their rebates.

Fetch Rewards

Fetch Rewards accepts most e-receipts as proof of purchase for their points-based rebates, which include big brands like Dove, Huggies, Cottonelle, Tropicana, and Annie’s. Link your email account (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, or AOL) to your Fetch account so they can access your itemized Walmart online grocery receipt to qualify for your rebate.

Coupons.com

Coupons.com accepts both pickup receipts and e-receipts as a proof of purchase for rebates. In order to redeem an offer, clip the coupon in the Coupons.com app, purchase an eligible product, then select coupon and upload a picture or screenshot of the receipt.

Ibotta

Ibotta is allowing Walmart grocery pickup purchases as qualifying for Ibotta rebates! Link your Walmart account in the Ibotta app to receive rebates. They’ve even worked out a partnership so rebates will apply to your Walmart account.

Makeena

Makeena always accepts itemized packing slips and e-receipts as proof of purchase. Unless otherwise specified, you can purchase products at any store — even online grocers that give you itemized packing slips.

Shopkick

Shopkick does not allow users to earn “kicks” on Walmart grocery purchases. Shopkick gives shoppers points for walking into stores (with geolocation on your phone), scanning products, and uploading receipts.

4. Walmart’s cash-back credit card pays 5% back on groceries.

Loyal Walmart shoppers can also earn 5% cash back on all Walmart, Walmart.com, and Walmart pickup and delivery orders with the Walmart Chase credit card.

There’s no limit to how much you can earn with the 5% back. This card competes with the best retailer cards out there like the Target REDcard debit card and the Amazon Chase credit card, which both pay 5% back. This 5% applies to everything purchased from grocery pickup, including non-grocery items.

5. Shoppers may get a freebie bag from Walmart Grocery Pickup.

Since the Walmart grocery pickup service launched in 2018, they have been surprising pickup shoppers as often as monthly with free goodie bags like the one above. The bags are full of free samples, coupons, and even full-sized products.

While you never know exactly when you may get a bag, it never hurts to politely ask the Walmart associate if they have any in stock, or when they plan to give out bags next.

6. Walmart releases new grocery pickup slots at midnight, local time.

If you’re having trouble finding available grocery pickup slots at Walmart, check between midnight and 7AM local time, when Walmart releases new pickup slots up to a week in advance.

7. Walmart online grocery shopping prices are always the same prices you’d pay in stores.

Walmart grocery prices consistently beat other major players including Target and Amazon, even if only by a penny. The single best thing about Walmart grocery pickup (and delivery, for that matter): Walmart grocery never inflates their prices.

The prices you pay for curbside pickup are identical to what you’d pay in the store. This is a big deal, considering plenty of retailers still use third-party delivery companies like Instacart, which tend to inflate their prices for online shoppers.

8. How does Walmart grocery pickup work?

Here are the Walmart grocery pickup highlights:

  • Place an order through the Walmart grocery website, in the Walmart grocery app, or with Walmart Text to Shop.
  • Orders require a minimum $30 purchase, but pickup is always free.
  • Select a one-hour pickup window.
  • When you’re on your way, open the Walmart grocery app to check in.
  • Drive up to a designated Walmart pickup parking spot and, in the app, let Walmart know the parking space number and the color of your vehicle.
  • A store associate will load items into your trunk while you stay in your car.
  • Wait times vary by location, but our experience is 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Place orders up to a week in advance.
  • Add items to your already-placed order up to 1:45AM the day of your pickup.

Step 1: Get the Walmart grocery app.

The easiest way to place your Walmart pickup or delivery orders is with the free Walmart grocery app, available for iPhone or Android or by sending a text with Walmart’s Text To Shop feature. You can also place your order online at grocery.walmart.com.

You cannot place a Walmart grocery order for pickup or delivery through the standard Walmart.com portal.

Step 2: Reserve a time slot.

Make sure you select your Walmart pickup location and pick your time slot BEFORE adding items to your virtual cart. Every store has different inventory numbers and available time slots, so by doing this, you’re making sure you have the most accurate idea of what’s in stock.

Step 3: Place your Walmart grocery order.

Walmart pickup-eligible items include fresh produce, pantry staples, health & beauty, garden tools, office supplies, and way more. Your next pickup order could also include board games like Sorry!, a Nintendo, an Air Fryer, even a pair of AirPods.

Remember, your order must reach a $30 minimum to qualify for pickup. Walmart curbside pickup is always free.

Step 4: Add any additional products until almost 2 a.m. the day of your pickup.

OK, earlier I said the single best thing about Walmart grocery pickup is that they don’t inflate their in-store price for online orders. I lied about that being the best. This is the best:

After you place your initial order, Walmart allows you to edit your order, including adding and removing items, up until 1:45AM on the day of your pickup. I think my average number of edits is about 14.

You can even edit the pickup time and date of your order up until 1AM the day of your pickup. Sign in to your account and select ‘My Orders’ to verify the exact cutoff time for making changes in your area.

Step 5: Review substitutions.

At checkout, you can opt to allow for substitutions or not. We always recommend you allow them. If an item you ordered is out of stock before your order is filled, Walmart will substitute a similar item.

If the substituted item is cheaper than the original, you’ll pay the cost of the cheaper item. If the substituted item is more expensive than the original, you’ll still pay the price of the cheaper item.

In most cases, if you’re buying a name brand, like Mrs. Butterworth’s maple syrup, Walmart will substitute a store brand item, such as Great Value original syrup. Don’t expect to go from Jif Peanut Butter to Skippy from a substitution. Expect the store brand.

Shoppers most likely to benefit from the allowing substitutions are those placing orders for generic brands and hoping for “free upgrades” to name brand items.

You can reject substituted items right up until the Walmart associate asks you from your pickup slot. Those rejected items and their charges will be removed from your order.

Step 6: Pick up your order.

Top Ten Quick Facts for Couponing at Walmart Grocery Pickup

1. Does Walmart accept manufacturer coupons at grocery pickup?

No. Walmart does not accept paper or digital manufacturer coupons for grocery pickup at this time.

2. Can I use a discounted gift card to pay for my Walmart grocery pickup order?

Walmart does not accept gift cards as payment for grocery pickup orders.

3. Does Walmart price match competitors for grocery pickup?

Not at this time. Which is fine, since it wouldn’t make much sense with the regular Walmart price match policy.

In addition to the basics, like the item must match the exact size and model and be in stock on the competitor’s website, the low points of this policy are that you can only price match one item per day, and can’t match in store.

4. What forms of payment does Walmart grocery pickup accept?

In addition to all major credit cards, all Walmart pickup locations accept EBT as payment. Walmart gift cards are not allowed. Cash and/or checks are not allowed for Walmart grocery pickup orders, because your payment is set up online beforehand.

5. What happens if you don’t pick up your Walmart grocery order?

If your pickup window is 10 – 11AM and you don’t make it until the afternoon, your groceries will be held for you. If you want to give Walmart a heads-up that you’re running late, you can call Customer Care at 1-800-924-9206. But as long as you arrive before the last pickup slot ends (8PM in my area) on the day of your pickup, your order will be available for you.
If you don’t show at all, Walmart will reshelve your order. Officially, you may be charged a restocking fee, but I think this is to protect the stores from someone who might take advantage. There isn’t any evidence of Walmart routinely charging restocking fees. If your order goes un-picked up, you can cancel or reschedule pickup in the Walmart grocery app.

6. Can I purchase alcohol at Walmart grocery pickup?

In most states, you can buy alcohol, (beer, wine, or liquor) from grocery pickup. You will be required to show a valid photo ID and provide a signature confirming you are age 21 or over. Walmart limits orders of alcohol to 20 gallons or less.
Because Walmart must comply with individual states’ alcohol and liquor laws, your ability to purchase alcohol will vary based on where you live. But in most cases, Walmart pickup hours are between 7AM – 8PM. Most liquor-excluded hours are in the 1AM – 6AM range.

7. Should you tip the associate at Walmart grocery pickup?

Walmart store associates do not accept tips for grocery pickup.

8. What if I get bad produce from Walmart grocery pickup?

Walmart guarantees satisfaction on every grocery pickup item, including produce. Call Customer Care (1-800-924-9206) to report any produce issues and request a full refund. You can even take your e-receipt into a Walmart store and make the same refund request. Walmart even says there’s no need to take the damaged produce with you to the store.

9. How do I get an itemized receipt from Walmart grocery pickup?

Walmart automatically emails an itemized digital receipt to your email with every grocery pickup order. You can also look up your digital receipt under “Recent Orders” in your account. You can even print your Walmart grocery pickup receipt.

10. What if an item’s price changes after I place my order?

According to a corporate memo, if Walmart in-store prices decrease between the time a grocery pickup order is placed and when it’s picked up, customers will pay the lower amount on the day of pickup.
