Now don’t panic. You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to do this. Before Paas ever started making their adorable kits, homemakers were using fruits, plants, and teas to dye their eggs! True story! So by grabbing a few ingredients around the house, you too will be able to whip up a variety of soft-hued dyes in no time.
Here’s what you will need:
- 4 cups of red cabbage
- 1/4 cup of turmeric
- 2 medium beets
- medium bottle of white distilled vinegar
For Pink/Red Eggs
Combine 2 chopped medium beets, ¼ cup of vinegar, and 3 cups water. Simmer for 30 minutes, then strain into a large bowl. Let eggs steep in solution for 30 minutes for a delicate light pink, or up to 4 hours for a deeper red.
For Purple Eggs
Combine 2 cups chopped cabbage, ¼ cup of vinegar, and 1 qt. water. Simmer for 30 minutes; strain into a large bowl. Steep eggs in water for at least 30 minutes. Different cabbages will yield different shades, so feel free to experiment!
For Yellow Eggs
Bring 3 cups water to a boil; add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 2 teaspoons of turmeric. Let steep for 10 minutes. Add eggs and let steep in solution for at least 30 minutes and up to 3 hours.
For Green Eggs
Combine ¼ cup of the yellow dye mixture and 2 cups of the purple dye mixture. Let eggs steep in solution for at least 30 minutes and up to 3 hours. The boldness of the color will depend on how long you allow the egg to soak.
