When your kids are young, a spare night with your spouse AND extra money in the budget for a date night out can feel impossible.

Cue our favorite stay-at-home date night ideas. You’ll be shuffling the kiddos off to bed early all summer long so you can enjoy quality time with your favorite person.

1. Have a picnic in your backyard.

Grab a blanket, snacks, and your favorite beverage, and you’ve got yourself a cheap (and relaxing) date in your very own backyard.

2. Host a Chopped challenge.

Fill a bag with random (and probably weird) ingredients — just like the Chopped TV show. Set a timer and see who comes up with a better recipe.

3. Download The Night Sky app and stargaze from your backyard.

This app will tell you exactly what stars, constellations, planets and satellites you are looking at just by holding up your phone. Mind blown.

4. Choose a theme and plan your date around it.

Pick a theme and go a little overboard! For example, if your theme is Fiesta Friday, make Mexican food, play salsa music, and drink margaritas.

Or maybe you want to do an Italian theme with fettuccine alfredo and wine while watching The Godfather.

If you’re nostalgic about your honeymoon to Hawaii, recreate it by playing Hawaiian music, cooking up a plate lunch, and mixing a Mai Tai or two!

5. Get food delivered from Uber Eats.

You don’t even need to leave your house. Download the Uber Eats app and search nearby restaurants in your area. Place an order and the food will show up on your doorstep.

We love using food delivery apps when we want to stay home but are too lazy to cook. It’s a win-win for sure.

6. Rent a Redbox for free.

There are so many tricks to getting free or cheap Redbox rentals. You may even find a free Redbox promo code on your microwavable popcorn box!

7. Read a book together.

Relax on your couch or bed and take turns reading a book out loud. Talk about the book and discuss it as you go.

One Valentine’s Day, we ended up staying home. My husband read a (horrible) romance novel out loud while we ate takeout and laughed the night away!

8. Make fancy food or drinks from Pinterest.

Browse Pinterest for some food and drink ideas, then put your bartending or chef skills to the test. See who can make it better!

9. Have a tasting night.

Do ice cream tasting, cheese tasting, wine tasting — whatever floats your boat. Get three, four, five or ten different options and try them all. Rate each item on a scale, and share your favorites.

10. Have a blindfolded generic food taste-off.

Get name brand cereals, crackers, cookies, etc. and then grab the generic versions. See which you prefer in a blindfolded taste test!

11. Make homemade pizza.

Find a recipe, get the ingredients, and make your own homemade personal-size pizzas at home.

If that sounds like too much work, check out the broke girl’s guide to getting free or cheap pizza. You’re welcome.

12. Have a game night.

But don’t be too loud and wake the kids up. Play board games, card games, get an inexpensive dart board, Farkle — you name it. The name of the game is to have fun.

13. Binge watch a new Netflix series.

Get your sweats on, grab a blanket, and find a new (or old) Netflix series to binge watch for the night. Plus, our ingenious Netflix hacks will seriously change your life.

14. Camp out in the living room — or build a fort.

I will never be “too old” to camp out or build a fort in the living room. Cozy up and you can even make s’mores over your stove or a candle.

15. Plan your next vacation.

If you have been putting off planning a family vacation or maybe a solo vacation without the kids (definitely this one), take the time to start planning. Make a list of the top destinations and travel dates to get the ball rolling.
