Whether you’re a new couponer or an OG, you'll want to check out the Sunday coupon insert schedule. Almost every Sunday, the newspaper includes coupon booklets, also called “freestanding inserts.” On holiday weekends, though, inserts are often skipped, so knowing which weeks have coupons (or none) can save you from buying extra newspapers.

For beginners, Sunday inserts aren’t just about saving money — they’re part of a long-standing tradition in couponing. Over the years, clipping these inserts became a weekly ritual for many shoppers, and understanding their history gives you a sense of why they’ve been so popular and how they’ve changed.

There are many ways to get free Sunday newspapers or your Sunday paper subscription for cheap . You can also check your local Dollar Tree; they often carry the Sunday newspaper for only $1.25. Walmart carries the Sunday paper all week, but the sticker price is at least $2. Keep in mind that there may be limits on how many you can buy.

Save (formerly RetailMeNot Everyday and Red Plum) and less often, Unilever Super Saver are the different inserts that come out on a regular basis, although the number of inserts issued each week varies.

The Unilever coupon insert has offers for select Unilever brands, like Axe, Degree, Dove, Ben & Jerry's, and Seventh Generation. And the Save insert features a variety of brands, with coupons for groceries, personal care products, cleaning supplies, and more.

The P&G coupon insert was officially gone, but it's back for 2025.

In 2023 the popular P&G coupon insert ended its distribution. Their last coupon booklet was on Jan. 1, 2023. But it appears to be back for 2025! The P&G coupon insert contains offers for P&G brands like Pampers, Tide, Charmin, and Gillette, just to name a few.

The SmartSource insert is officially gone as of June 2025.

We haven't seen a SmartSource coupon insert since March 2025, and as of June 2025, it looks like these coupons are gone for good.

KCL TIP: We use couponing abbreviations throughout The Krazy Coupon Lady website (like SS for SmartSource). And we have a list of the top couponing definitions and abbreviations so you don't get confused.

The History of Sunday Coupon Inserts

Sunday coupon inserts have been a weekly tradition for decades, giving shoppers a chance to clip deals for groceries, personal care products, and household essentials. These inserts became a ritual for many families, with stacks of newspapers spread across the kitchen table every Sunday morning. Over the years, coupon clippers relied on them not just for savings, but also for planning meals, stockpiling essentials, and even trading duplicates with friends.

However, the landscape has changed significantly in recent years. Some inserts, like SmartSource, have disappeared entirely, while others have shifted in frequency or content. Digital coupons and store apps have now supplemented (or even replaced) the traditional paper inserts, showing how couponing has evolved over time.
