Halloween costumes aren’t just for kids. You can get your four-legged friends in on the fun with a pet Halloween costume, too, and the prices start as low as $2.50! In fact, I’ve found pet Halloween costume deals that can save you up to 70%, but you’ll have to shop at a very specific time (the day after Halloween) to get deals that good.

Whether your dog needs something a bit less restrictive (like a simple harness or headband) or he’s on the smaller side, here are some options for pet Halloween costumes that won’t spook your wallet.

1. Wait until mid-October to save 50% on a pet Halloween costume at Petco and Kohl’s.

The best time to shop for dog Halloween costumes is either two weeks before the holiday or afterward. Here are two stores to keep an eye on for 50% off sales that start a few weeks before Halloween:

Petco drops prices by 50% for Bootique pet costumes in mid-October.

Starting Sept. 20, Petco puts their Halloween costumes on sale for BOGO 50% off if you shop online, which is basically a 25% discount on each. But the discounts get even higher if you can wait to shop their sales in mid-October.

Last year, Petco offered 50% off Bootique costumes starting Oct. 12. This brought dog Halloween costume prices down as low as $2.50 each!

Here are some of the best pet costumes I saw, all of which were marked down 50%:

  • Pizza headpiece for cats and dogs: $2.50
  • Unicorn costume for small pets: $4.50
  • King’s crown and cape for cats: $7.50
  • Devil headwear for dogs: $7.50
  • Beer run dog costume: $11

Kohl’s gives extra savings to Rewards members starting in mid-October.

Starting Oct. 13 last year, Kohl’s began marking their cat and dog Halloween costumes down. You could get an extra $10 off a purchase of $50+ with a promo code as a rewards member, plus there was a coupon good for 30% off for Kohl’s cardholders. This meant cardholders could get more like 70% savings. Plus, I saw rare savings on Disney costumes, too.

Check out the deals we saw last year in mid-October at Kohl’s:

  • Disney’s Mickey Mouse fleece dog hoodies: $11.66 each when you buy 3
  • Disney’s Star Wars I Am The Child dog hoodies: $11.66 when you buy 3

2. Can’t wait for a sale? Pet Halloween costumes are cheapest on Amazon.

If you’re shopping before mid-October, you can find the lowest regular prices on trending dog Halloween costumes on Amazon.

Amazon’s best-selling dog Halloween costumes are mostly under $20, with many priced lower than $15. Plus Amazon has the largest selection of costumes, with multiple options for the same style. For example, you can get a dog lion mane wig in all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes. Some even come with a lion’s tail. Compare this to a store like PetSmart, where there’s only one option for a lion mane.

3. Buy Aldi’s $5.99 dog hoodie costumes starting Oct. 4.

If you’re lucky enough to have an Aldi in your city, take advantage of their super-cheap dog costumes. You don’t even have to wait for half of October to be over. In fact, I recommend shopping as early as you can to get their $5.99 dog costumes.

Last year they had a dinosaur, a unicorn, and a bumblebee option the first week of October. This year, it’s going to be a super hero tutu, devil, bee, fox, or spider.

Plus, when compared with similar costumes on Amazon, the savings were steep. Amazon charged $15 vs. Aldi’s $6!

4. Buy Dollar General’s $3 costumes if you only need them for one or two uses.

Dollar General’s super cheap dog Halloween costumes won’t take a ton of wear and tear, but if you just need something for Halloween night, it’s a great option. Last year I saw headpiece and cape sets — a princess and a witch — for $3 each.

5. Need a cat Halloween costume? Go with accessories.

Cats can be much better at removing their costumes, so I suggest simple accessories like bat wings, a headpiece, or a ruffly collar. These usually run less than $10 at places like PetSmart, Petco, Chewy, Five Below, and more.

6. Get costumes for your lizard, rabbit, and guinea pigs at PetSmart for as low as $3.

If you’ve got a very small animal, you’ll probably want something that attaches to their back or neck. You can find lizard and guinea pig costumes for super cheap at PetSmart (think: $3 – $8). Rabbit costumes are closer to cat costume prices. But even so, you can find those at Petco for under $10.

7. Shop after-Halloween clearance sales for the lowest prices all year.

If you don’t need a dog Halloween costume this year, definitely wait until after the holiday to shop! PetSmart knocks prices down by 70% starting the day after Halloween. This means you’ll find costumes for as low as $2. Last year, I saw a reptile dog costume and dog scarecrow costume for this price.

Most of their other stuff will be marked down 50% during this time as well. So, between the mid-October sales and the after-Halloween sales, you should be able to find half-price dog costumes for this year and next.
