If you’re wondering what’s the deal with all these red noses for sale at the Walgreens checkout counter lately… we were, too. They pop up every year around this time as part of a fundraising event called Red Nose Day, which seeks to address childhood poverty and a lack of healthcare.

As a partner of Red Nose Day, Walgreens sells foam clown noses and donates a portion of the proceeds to the Red Nose Day Fund.

But if you’re not into keeping foam noses in your sock drawer, we’ll tell you how you can still participate in the annual event. Here’s what you need to know about Walgreens’ participation in Red Nose Day.

When is Red Nose Day 2023?

The official date for Red Nose Day 2023 is May 25 — it’s always the last Thursday in May — but you can start participating right now by buying a red nose from Walgreens.

Then on May 25, join in celebrating Red Nose Day by wearing your Red Nose in public or in photos on your social media page.

Red Nose Day is making a difference in the lives of children facing poverty.

A sign in Walgreens about Red Nose Day

Red Nose Day has been around since 2015, and since then the event has raised an incredible $324 million. Their main goal is to end child poverty, and they’re doing some amazing work to make that happen.

A little background: Red Nose Day is a fundraising campaign organized by a charity called Comic Relief. They use the power of entertainment to create a positive impact for people in need in the U.S. and around the world. Some of their successful campaigns include Red Nose Day, Idol Gives Back, and Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief. You can find out more at ComicRelief.org.

They support programs that focus on the immediate needs of children living in poverty while also working toward long-term change. Their aim is to break the cycle of poverty and give every child a healthy future, no matter where they live.

To achieve this, Red Nose Day issues grants to trusted partners who work across the U.S. and beyond. These partners deliver a range of programs that are designed to make a real difference in the lives of children who are in need.

Red Noses are available for $1 at Walgreens through May 31 — and at least $0.50 of each purchase goes to ending child poverty & more.

You can purchase your Red Nose in-store exclusively at Walgreens and Duane Reade stores between April 10 and May 31, while supplies last.

Walgreens will donate at least $0.50 for each Red Nose sold to Comic Relief U.S.’s Red Nose Day fund.

TIP: If you choose to make a cash donation at the register — and skip getting the red nose — 100% of your donation will go to the charity fund.

You can also donate online to get a ‘digital’ red nose — and 100% of the donation goes to charity.

Don’t feel like going into Walgreens? You can support Red Nose Day digitally, too!

When you make a donation online at RedNoseDay.org/Walgreens, you’ll unlock a digital Red Nose filter to use on Facebook and Instagram. Donating this way will also ensure 100% of the funds go toward the fundraising campaign. The online donation portal is a minimum donation of $5. To get the filter, you’ll click on either the Instagram logo or Facebook logo on the digital Red Nose page using your mobile device, and it will give you your filter.

If you donate digitally, don’t forget to use the hashtag #NosesOn, and also tag @RedNoseDayUSA in your post!

Your Red Nose Day donation is tax-deductible.

If you donate to Red Nose Day, it’s possible to deduct that donation, as the non-profit behind Red Nose Day is a 501(c)(3) organization. However, it depends on things like your individual tax situation and the laws where you live.

It’s always a good idea to double-check with a tax professional or use tax preparation software to make sure you’re doing everything correctly.
