- Trim the wick: Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. Also, make sure to trim it after every 4 hours of burn time. This helps prevent the wick from getting too long and creating a big, flickering flame that can burn through the wax too quickly.
- Melt the wax evenly: When you light your candle for the first time, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the container. This prevents tunneling, which is when the wax only melts in the center and leaves a rim of unmelted wax around the edge. Tunneling wastes a lot of wax and shortens the candle’s overall burn time.
- Avoid drafts: Candles should be kept away from drafty areas like open windows or doors. Drafts can cause the flame to flicker and the wax to melt unevenly, which can shorten the lifespan of your candle.
- Use a candle snuffer: To extinguish the flame, use a candle snuffer. This helps prevent hot wax from splattering and also helps preserve the wick for future use.
- Store candles properly: Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Exposure to heat and light can cause the wax to soften or fade, which can shorten the candle’s lifespan.
