It seems simple enough: to avoid fires in your home, you should install and maintain working smoke detectors. However, according to the National Fire Protection Association, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

Are smoke alarms expensive?

Smoke alarms are not expensive if you consider the fact that they may save your life as well as the lives of your loved ones. They can cost as low as $6.00, whereas a dual-sensor smoke alarm can go as high as $40.00. For all of us Krazy Coupon Ladies, this may seem a little steep; however, there are many fire departments out there that will give you free smoke detectors, and some will even install them for you.

Many cities offer free smoke detectors to their citizens. Contact your local fire department via their non-emergency phone number. They may offer free smoke detectors or ones at reduced rates—they may even install battery-operated detectors at no cost.

Smoke alarm maintanence

Remember, having a smoke detector isn’t enough to eliminate the risk of having a fire in your home. Detectors should be checked once a month by setting the alarm, and batteries should be replaced once a year. But then again, that's why we have the Krazy Coupon Lady to help us find all those battery deals!!
