How I'd Hit $15 Without Overspending

The trick with this deal (like any threshold deal) is landing just over the line with things you'd have bought anyway, so that you unlock the $5 (and still have a few things left on your list for the next month). I'm not dumping my whole list in one basket and losing out on a chance to get another $5.

Here's how I'm going about it:

Month 1 ($18 basket): Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash, Dove Men+Care Body & Face Wash (for my husband), and the TRESemmé. I'm knocking out two of the things I'm out of and that my house burns through (the shampoo and body wash), knowing my stick of deodorant will last me until month two (hopefully).

Month 2 ($18.65 basket): The Degree deodorant, the Axe Apollo spray, and Vaseline.

Month 3 ($17.80 basket): SheaMoisture Curl Smoothie and another Vaseline for my medicine cabinet.

This plan has me spending about $54 on stuff I actually need and earning three $5 rewards to spend on other things at Family Dollar (a 28% return on my spending).

What I'm Doing With My $5 Rewards

Those $5 coupons I'm earning are going toward even more stock-ups, and you can use them on anything. I'll probably use them on other Unilever personal care items I missed in the first stock-up. The $5 coupons stack with Family Dollar's Saturday coupon, by the way, so I know which day of the week I'm going to Family Dollar every time I have $5 to redeem.

The Bottom Line: I'm buying the stuff I was already buying in a strategic order, restocking my bathroom cabinet, and unlocking savings that I'll be glad to have because money's about to get tight again around the holidays.
