Taking to the road for family gatherings during the holidays can be either an enjoyable journey or a terrible trip. Of course, many factors like weather, traffic, the accuracy of directions, your child’s level of boredom, and gas stations along your route each add to or take away from the experience. While we can’t control the majority of these factors, we can at least let you know if gas stations are open on Christmas.
Yes, gas stations are open on Christmas. But not all of them; we’ll tell you how to find them. Like we did for lists of restaurants open on Thanksgiving and stores open on Christmas, we did our research and put together a list of 44 stations, many with 24-hour service and a convenience store.

Finding EV charging stations for your holiday travels
We answered your question “are gas stations open on Christmas?” — what if you don’t need gas? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. If your Christmas travel requires recharging your EV battery, several traditional gas stations, like Spinx in South Carolina, have added one or more charging stations. You can also use these two sites for planning your trip.
AfdcEnergy.gov has a map of charging stations around the country. You can filter the map by charger types: Level 1, 2, or DC Fast or connectors: J1772, CCS, CHAdeMO, or Tesla.
With PlugShare.com, you can view a map of EV charging stations and plan your holiday trip using their Trip Planner tool, so you’ll know exactly where your charging stations will be along the way.
Use travel centers for your Christmas Day road trip needs.
Travel centers offer much more than gas or an EV charging station. In addition to fueling up, you can do things like your laundry, walk your dog, take a shower, and enjoy a sit-down meal. Unfortunately, none of these three travel centers have a location in Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, or Maine.

Tips for finding a gas station near you while on the road:
Here are five ways you can use your mobile device to find a gas station near you wherever you are on your Christmas trip.
- Download the GasBuddy app to search by city, state, or brand for a station near you. If you’re not tied to a brand, GasBuddy can help you calculate the cost of gas for your Christmas trip and help you find the cheapest gas station along the way.
- Download the app from your favorite gas station to use its locator tool to help you find the nearest gas station for your brand. Mobile gas station apps offer exclusive perks or ways to save at the pump.
- Use Google Maps: type the word gas or a specific place you’re searching in the search bar. Tap one of the gas stations, then “Directions.”
- Use Apple Maps: Type the word gas into the search bar, select a gas station, tap on the car icon, and then the drive option.
- Use the Waze app: type gas into the search bar and select a gas station. You can select “View routes” and “Start drive” to begin the route or select “Go later” and enter a specific time to leave for the station.
Mom-and-pop type stations are less likely to be open on Christmas, so search for major chain gas stations. Also, look for gas stations closer to the highway because they tend to be open longer hours, even during the holidays.
