Looking to save money and get free gift cards? There’s an app for that. No, really. It’s called Fetch.

Years ago, after several griping sessions with my sister-in-law about the cost to feed my family of four (our two boys eat a lot), she told me about a receipt-scanning app that offers cash rewards — and promptly sent me a referral link. Fetch. It sounded like a dog-sitting app. But I was curious. And after scanning my first receipt, I was hooked.

Mainly, it’s just a fun break from my usual routine and gives that little hit of dopamine, like when someone hearts your Instagram story. You scan your receipt (which is super fun and easy to do, btw), and you’ll get at least 25 rewards points, but sometimes you’ll get a few hundred … or a few thousand. (Before you get excited, 1,120 points equals about $1 back. But trust me, it adds up.) You can stockpile your points and exchange them for gift cards to retailers like Amazon, Starbucks, and Ulta.

Each year, I save up Fetch points and redeem them in December for an Amazon gift card (Santa needs cash, y’all). Here are some of my fave ways to get those points to add up quickly, resulting in more cash in your pocket.

TIP: Use the code KCL to receive 1,000 points for free.

Fetch Hack #1: Earn thousands of Fetch points with friend referrals (when the timing’s right).

Usually, your friend referral code will get you and your friend 1,000 points after they download the app and scan their first receipt. But sometimes, Fetch will raise the referral bonus to 3,000 or even 4,000 points — that’s when you spread the good word. Now, I’m not above working the system — I literally took my husband’s phone (with his permission!), downloaded the app, scanned a receipt, got my points, and deleted the app. I’ve done this with a few family members. (Ideally, they would continue to use the app, but sometimes they just don’t wanna. Their loss.)

Don’t forget about the little blue eReceipt button. This allows you to connect your email address and online accounts such as Amazon, Instacart, and Walmart to Fetch. Any orders placed in the last 30 days will apply, and you'll earn at least 25 Fetch points on every online receipt.

Note: It does take a minute or two to scan everything, so be patient (or multitask).

Fetch Hack #3: Shop through the Fetch app for extra points.

Click the little shopping cart icon at the bottom of the app to shop online and get extra points. Tons of retailers are featured, from Sephora to Sam’s Club, some awarding as much as 60 points per $1 spent. I’m a Target deals girl through and through, and I can often get five or 10 points per each dollar spent on groceries. I just do my shopping through the actual Target app. Then, before placing my Drive Up order, I connect through Target in Fetch to place the order and get cash points in my pocket.

Fetch Hack #4: Scan every single receipt to earn at least 25 Fetch points for each one.

Nothing is off-limits. Nothing. Gas receipts. Restaurants. Oil changes. Every receipt you scan will earn you a minimum 25 points. So when you're asked “Would you like your receipt?” The answer is always, “Yes”! Don't be shy either. Ask family members or friends (if they're not Fetch members) collect receipts for you. Especially grocery receipts, because that’s where the deals are.

Okay, want the truth? I’ve even grabbed a receipt or two off the top of the Target trash can at self-checkout to scan. Don't judge. Those are free Fetch points with no spend on my part.

Fetch Hack #5: Combine Fetch coupons with store-specific offers for greater savings.

Early on in my Fetch journey, my biggest receipt was nearly 9,000 points, thanks to a rather large grocery shopping trip where I combined Fetch coupons with store-specific (in this case Publix) deals. Here's how it worked:

At the time, Publix offered several BOGO free and BOGO 50% off deals on many Fetch-featured brands (hello, General Mills and Barilla) that had special point offers, like earn 1,000 points when you buy two items.

The combination of Fetch BOGOs and brand offers all went toward my Fetch points. Confession: I typically don’t search Fetch for offers first; I’m more of a shop-and-hope-for-the-best kinda gal. So it was a very pleasant surprise!

Note: You can also play in-app games and get points, if you have the time.
