If you’ve got some wonderful family memories or your kids’ school pictures in the form of photos stored on Shutterfly, now is the time to review your account. Beginning in September 2022, Shutterfly notified existing customers that inactive accounts would be closed in early 2023. And as of Wednesday, March 29, 2023, Shutterfly will close any inactive accounts and remove any photos stored in those affected accounts.

So how do you know if your account is active? If you made a Shutterfly purchase within the last 18 months, your account — and all of its photos — are safe from being closed. Moving forward, you’ll need to make at least one purchase every 18 months to keep your account in active status and avoid losing all of your photos. Here’s everything we know about the Shutterfly account news and how to save your pics if you’re worried.

School pictures are not affected by the new inactive account policy.

If your first thought, like ours, was whether or not you’d lose your Lifetouch school photos or JCPenney Portrait Studio photos, you’re safe! According to Shutterfly’s terms and conditions, all purchased photos from Lifetouch and JCPenney Portrait Studio will remain in your Shutterfly account even if no purchases are made in the allotted time frame.

Make a purchase within 18 months to keep your Shutterfly account active (and keep your pics!).

If you’re not ready to consider another photo storage option and want to keep your Shutterfly account active, just make a purchase (no minimum) within 18 months. The no-minimum spend requirement at Shutterfly is the key here. Your account will remain open even if your “purchase” is a free or promotional price item!

If you don’t see a current free Shutterfly promo offer, the most affordable option is to order some prints. They offer 4×6 prints for $0.18 and regularly have deals that drop them as low as $0.09 each.

Note: You could always export your photos to another service, like Google Photos — but they have some policies of their own regarding inactive Google Accounts.

Shop cheap Shutterfly deals or freebies to keep your account active.

With Shutterfly freebies, you still need to pay shipping which is always around $7.99. So even just shopping the freebies and paying the $8 shipping fee will keep your account and your photos safe.
