Recently Subway changed up their loyalty program, capitalizing on their ad campaign featuring some of today’s biggest sports stars. The Subway MyWay Rewards program (RIP) is now MVP Rewards. All members of the old program are switched over automatically. For new members signing up now, you’ll get 250 bonus points right away.

But when you get past the sporty new names for the program tiers and whatnot, the nuts and bolts of the program are pretty much the same (womp, womp). It’s just that instead of using the antiquated term “tokens,” you earn “points.”

Under the previous regime customers accumulated 4 tokens for every $1 spent. You needed 200 tokens to earn a paltry $2 reward ($50 spent). Now. you get 10 points per $1 spent, and need 400 points for that darn $2 reward ($40 spent). While that’s certainly better than having to spend $50, this still aint no McDonald’s rewards program, know what we mean?

We’re diving into how the new program works below (read: same as the old one but…sports!) and will review the small changes.

There are over 30 million Subway rewards members in North America. On Sept. 9, 2023 they were automatically enrolled in the new Subway MVP Rewards program. Don’t worry, though — any unspent tokens (what the old program used as “points”) will become points in the new version. Earn points on the Subway app, online, or in restaurants.

A standard $2 Reward requires a $40 spend (compared to $50 with the previous reward program)

With the MyWay Rewards program you earned 4 tokens for every $1 spent. To reach a $2 reward you needed 200 points ($50 spent). Now, under the Subway MVP Rewards, you earn 10 points for every $1 spent, but need 400 points to get that same $2 rewards ($40 spent). Quick and easy math tells us you’ll spend $10 less now to get the still kinda sad-feeling $2 reward.

Additionally, the more you spend at Subway the faster you’ll move up the ranks in tiers. The two upper tiers allow customers to earn more points on purchases than just the 10 points for every $1 spent (more on that below).

The ‘Way is also hyping “even better” birthday rewards, but we don’t actually know what that means. Anyone have a birthday coming up? Tell us what you get!

The new program has three membership tiers to earn rewards.

Loyal Subway customers can become a Pro, Captain, or All-Star. Each tier has its own set of perks, including birthday rewards, free food, and bonus points.

Pro Rewards Tier

  • 250-point sign up bonus (new members only)

  • Birthday and anniversary rewards

  • $1 spent = 10 points on qualifying purchases

  • 5% bonus points on mobile orders

  • Bonus point days, earning challenges, and members-only deals

Captain Rewards Tier

  • All Pro tier perks; $200 annual spending

  • Exclusive bonus point days

  • Better birthday and anniversary rewards (kinda vague so what “better” means is to be determined)

  • Members-only Subway Swag Shop access

  • $1 spent = 10% more points on qualifying purchases

All-Star Rewards Tier

  • All Captain tier perks; $400 annual spending

  • Free Chip Fridays (with purchase)

  • $1 spent = 20% more points on qualifying purchases

  • Even bigger birthday and anniversary rewards (see above about being vague!)

  • Additional bonus point days

  • Members-only VIP exclusives

New members get 250 bonus points when they register.

When you sign up for the first time, new members get 250 bonus points without purchasing anything. It can take up to 72 hours for the bonus points to appear in your Subway MVP account.

Join the Subway MVP Rewards Program for free – just download the app.

Start earning points by downloading the Subway app and registering. Or enter your phone number at the register. This will enroll you in the Subway MVP Rewards program once you register.

Don’t expect a physical card in the mail. Instead, you’ll have a digital card on the Subway app or online. Just scan it when you check out in Subway stores.

Earn a $2 reward with every 400 points you earn (that means every $40 spent).

To get your first $2 reward, you’ll need to accumulate 400 points, which means $40 spent if you are a member of the lowest tier (Pro). That’s just about 5% back in rewards. However, when you sign up you get those automatic 250 bonus points, which means you’ll only need 150 more to hit that rewards threshold (or $15 spent). Of course, if you eat at Subway regularly, you’ll rack up points more quickly in the upper tiers. The middle tier (Captain) provides 10% more points on qualifying purchases, and the top tier (All-Star) gives 20% more points.

Put your $2 Rewards towards purchases, but you only have 90 days to use it.

Once you accumulate $2 in rewards, apply it to your app or online purchases. Before starting your order, select the rewards you want to redeem. In case you’re wondering, rewards can’t be transferred to other members.

Once the $2 Reward is in your account, you have 90 days to redeem it. Otherwise, it will expire forever. The good news is that you can redeem up to 24 $2 rewards on a single purchase.

Rewards are only available at participating restaurants.

Subway has 37,000 restaurants, so you’d think that every store would be part of the rewards program. According to the Subway website, the new MVP Rewards program is only available at participating restaurants. And points can’t be earned through third-party delivery orders, gift card purchases, or catering orders.
