Netflix announced in October 2022 that they would charge for password sharing beginning in early 2023. The exact timeline for when the new plan will be implemented hasn’t yet been revealed. However, what we do know is the streamer will charge a fee for extra users on your account. The system is already in place in some other countries, including Chile and Costa Rica. In these areas, fees for extra users ranged between $3 and $5 per user.

Currently, Netflix monitors for password sharing through a variety of ways. These include observation of IP addresses, device IDs, and user account activity. If Netflix determines that a frequent user of your account is outside of your household, they will send a 4-digit code to the email address and/or mobile number of the account holder to verify within 15 minutes. It’s not clear if these methods will change in the future.

Here’s everything else you need to know about Netflix password sharing and the coming crackdown on the practice.
