Protein's gotten ridiculously expensive lately, in case you haven't noticed. I was just at the store looking at those fancy protein bars — $2.50 each. And don't even get me started on what Greek yogurt costs now. That's why I was excited when I spotted something new in the cereal aisle that might help cut down on protein costs: A new flavor of Cheerios Protein cereal that packs eight grams of protein in each serving.

And by clipping a digital Kroger coupon, you can save $1 when you stock up on two boxes.

Cheerios Protein just added a Cookies & Creme flavor.

I'll be honest — I didn't even know Cheerios made a protein version until I saw this new Cookies & Creme flavor. Turns out they've had Cinnamon and Strawberry for a while, but this one caught my eye because my younger nieces and nephews would definitely eat something that tastes like cookies for breakfast.

And based on the reviews I checked, people are loving it — it's averaging 4.5 - 5 stars across Target, Walmart, and Kroger websites. You can find all the flavors at those stores (plus Amazon too).

Each serving has eight grams of protein, and the sugar isn't too high.

Here's what surprised me: There's actually eight grams of protein (from pea protein) in each serving — that's 1 cup. Add regular milk, and you're at 16 grams of protein.

I was also curious about the sugar content, especially in that Cookies & Creme flavor, but it's only 11 grams per serving compared to two grams in regular Cheerios. Plus, you're getting 12 grams of whole grains, it's gluten-free, and it includes added vitamins like B6, B12, iron, and vitamin D.

Kroger has a digital coupon for $1 off when you buy two.

I found the 11.2-ounce boxes at Kroger for $5.99 — that's $0.75 per serving, or just $0.10 per gram of protein. But there's a $1 off two digital coupon in the Kroger app (download for iOS / Android) that drops your cost to $5.49 per box when you buy two — or as low as $0.69 per serving. I clipped it immediately because these coupons sometimes disappear fast.

This cereal isn't just for breakfast.

Here's what I'm also excited about — you can use this stuff beyond breakfast. I've been mixing it into Greek yogurt for even more protein as a snack, and kids would love it in homemade trail mix. It'd also be great in no-bake cereal bar recipes or marshmallow treats.

When protein powder costs $30 or more and fancy protein yogurts are $2 each, finding something that costs as a low as $0.69 a serving and works multiple ways? That's worth stocking up on.
