So you’ve decided you’re gonna give your house a facelift. Usually, though, all that optimism is swallowed up when you start looking at prices for the things you’re wanting to update.

Don’t despair! Here are a dozen secrets to use at Home Depot that’ll make sure you’re not taking out a second mortgage for your home remodel.

1. Save up to 40% on kitchen and bath at the beginning of the year.

Wait until winter to remodel your bathroom or kitchen and save $$. Home Depot runs this winter event from January to mid-March, and you can save up to 40% on regular prices.

2. Get up to 80% off on leftover wood pieces.

These pieces are located on a shelf by themselves, so you’ll need to ask an associate where they’re located at your local store.

These pieces of lumber are perfect for smaller projects!

3. Save 50% (or more!) on the Special Buy of the Day.

You can score great deals on power tools, supplies and even materials that will help you with your remodel.

Before you commit to that flooring or backsplash, check out their daily special.

4. Attend a free workshop.

Home Depot offers frequent free Do-it-Yourself and Do-it-Herself workshops geared specifically toward home updates, like how to install and seal shiplap.

Check the schedule at your Home Depot to find out what they’re offering.

5. Get your lumber cut for free.

No need to invest in a pricey wood saw when you refresh your space. If you’re buying any amount of wood, Home Depot employees will cut it to any size you want.

6. Get free remodel advice from professionals on their blogs.

Blog posts include specifics on things like a DIY farmhouse kitchen and ways to increase your curb appeal, among others.

7. Rent any big tools you need for your remodel.

Never purchase anything you’re only going to use once. Home Depot rents everything from small power tools to large equipment, like tractors. Rental is typically a minimum of 4 hours and can go up to 4 weeks.

Check availability in your area here.

8. Increase your curb appeal during Spring Black Friday.

Home Depot offers special sales on topsoil, outdoor tools and equipment and materials to update your deck during their Spring Black Friday event, which is always held in April.

In the past, deals have included name-brand garden soil for $2.00 a bag (reg. $3.98) and a patio dining set for $299.00 (reg. $499.00).

TIP: Home Depot also honors competitors’ coupons. Stack them during sales events to get your best deal.

9. Look for yellow-ticketed items and save 50-80% on lighting and ceiling fans.

You can always find clearanced lighting and ceiling fans.

These are usually not moved to the clearance section because there just isn’t enough room — so look for them among the regular-priced fixtures.

10. Have your power tools repaired for free.

As long as it’s still under the manufacturer warranty, Home Depot will repair any of your power tools and then file a claim for you.
