I was skeptical when I first heard about Amazon’s Subscribe & Save service. I thought for sure it was just another way for Amazon to get their hooks into my wallet.
Well, that was partially true — they got into my wallet alright — but using Subscribe & Save to keep my household stocked up on everyday items ended up being a great decision.
From how to cancel Subscribe & Save to the best Subscribe & Save deals, here are the best tips for getting the most out of Amazon’s version of an autofill service.
1. Here’s how Amazon Subscribe & Save works.
How exactly does Subscribe & Save work, you ask? Well, it’s a subscription service that will deliver products straight to your door on a schedule (every 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 months; more on that below).
Subscribe & Save is available for thousands of different products. I’m talking everyday stuff like laundry detergent, toilet paper, shampoo, cleaning supplies, pet food, and even groceries/pantry items. Look through eligible Subscribe & Save products.
When you use Subscribe & Save on up to four products, you automatically save 5% on each product. (Hence the “save” in the Subscribe & Save). But it gets better.
2. Subscribe to five items or more and you’ll get 15% off.
First—and I can’t stress this enough—always make sure you always have at least five items in your subscription.
Why? Because Amazon will take 15% off your entire order if a subscription has a minimum of five items. (You can get 20% off for baby items like diapers and formula, read on for more info.) If you only subscribe to between one and four items, you’ll only save 5%. I know what you’re thinking — what if I don’t need five things this month? Two options if you’re in this spot:
1. I created a list of Amazon items under $5 to help you find cheap filler items to subscribe to.
2. You can subscribe to the same product in five separate orders to get the full 15% off. (Or 20% off for baby items.) For example, instead of placing a Subscribe & Save order for four packs of diapers in a single order, I’ll order one pack of diaper in four or five separate orders. That way I’m subscribing to the minimum of five items to get the maximum 20% discount.
3. You don’t need a Prime membership to use Subscribe & Save.
That’s right! You don’t need to be an Amazon Prime member to use Subscribe & Save. Both the service and the shipping are free!
Plus, there’s no obligation to continue receiving subscriptions, so canceling is totally free too. Here’s how to cancel a Subscribe & Save subscription in three easy steps.
4. Set your delivery date to the same day to make the most of your savings.
When I place an order with Subscribe & Save, my items get delivered on a set day every month (the date I want items delivered is up to me, and I can change it whenever I want by going to my account).
My set delivery date is the 6th of every month, so if I order new snacks for the kids today, I won’t see them until the 6th of next month.
5. Clip Subscribe & Save coupons to save on groceries, baby items, and beauty supplies.
I wouldn’t be telling you about Subscribe & Save if I weren’t a little obsessive about couponing. Many Subscribe & Save eligible items have digital Amazon coupons, which will save you money on your first purchase. Those coupons appear on the product details page, and all you have to do is select them before subscribing in order to automatically receive the discount. Subscribe & Save coupons may feature dollar-off savings or percent-off.
6. Stack Subscribe & Save coupons with your discount to save even more!
With Subscribe & Save, one of the best perks is the option to stack coupons. You can clip coupons on each product to get even more savings in addition to the 5% or 15% discount you automatically get with Subscribe & Save.
Percent-off coupons are calculated before the Subscribe & Save discount, which means you save more!
At checkout, you’ll see your 5-15% Subscribe & Save savings and your percent-off coupon savings as two distinct line-item discounts.
Note: These Amazon Subscribe & Save coupons apply only to your first delivery.
PRO TIP: Subsequent subscription deliveries will charge the current selling price, which could be above or below your original subscription price and won’t apply any coupon savings. Watch for an email three days before each subscription, and look at those prices or you could end up overpaying.
7. Take advantage of rare double stacking opportunities.
While rare, you may see instances where two Amazon coupons will stack with one another. One example is this 15% off category coupon for Honest personal care and another for 15% off when you buy Honest wipes. Finding these opportunities is like finding a needle in a haystack, but at KCL haystack hunting is our specialty.

8. Here are some of the best Amazon Subscribe & Save deals.
Some Subscribe & Save deals are better than others! I love subscribing to paper towels, because that’s a product I know I’ll always need more of, and I don’t mind being stocked up (plus it saves me time at the grocery store).

9. Amazon Prime members can save 20% on diaper subscriptions through Amazon Family.
They say by the time your baby is a year old, you’ll have changed over 2,500 diapers! Trust me, Subscribe & Save will save you—especially if you’re an Amazon Prime member (try Amazon Prime for free here).
Amazon Family is a free program for Prime members. Not only will you receive 20% off Subscribe & Save diaper subscriptions, you’ll have access to exclusive savings and offers when you create a free profile for your child.
10. You can cancel — or expedite — orders whenever you want, free of charge.
It may take you a couple of months to learn how much product your family will go through before the next Subscribe & Save shipment, but that’s okay. It’s super easy to make changes before the next shipment, because Amazon sends a reminder email before the next order ships. Make updates or skip an order when you need to.
If you need an item right away and can’t wait until your next delivery, you can expedite a single one-time delivery by clicking on “Need more right away?” after signing up.
Sometimes I find that I have too much of something. Luckily, pausing a subscription is a breeze: Just select “Your Subscribe & Save Items” under “My Account” on the Amazon website or app, and select the “Skip” button on the product you don’t want to be delivered quite yet. You can change the overall delivery date, or simply skip a month. Easy peasy!
There is no obligation to the S&S service, so you won’t be charged for canceling any of your subscriptions either.
