While Marshalls has some incredible discounted finds, there’s always a chance you’ll buy something that you want to return later. Luckily, the Marshalls return policy is pretty straightforward, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll get your money back.
The short story is you’ll have 30 – 40 days from the day you purchased the item to return it; the exact days you get depends on whether you shopped in stores or online. But to get a full refund, you’ll need to have your receipt and all tags attached. Things get a little trickier if you lost your receipt, and there are some things you should know if you’re returning holiday gifts.

Before You Start Your Marshalls Return

You have 30 days to return an item you bought in store for a refund.
As with many return policies, you’ll have 30 days from the day you bought an item in store at Marshalls to return it for a full refund. To return your item, you’ll need your receipt and the tags attached.
If you try to return an item after the 30-day window, you won’t get a refund — but you’ll get store credit as long as you have your receipt.
You have 40 days to return an item you bought online.
If you bought an item at Marshalls.com, you have 40 days from the date you placed your order to return it for a full refund unless otherwise noted on the packing slip.
Marshalls accepts online returns with either your receipt (which comes as a packing slip) or your shipping confirmation email. Returns by mail are accepted if they arrive at the Marshalls warehouse within 40 days of your order date. This means you can’t ship it back 40 days later — the items have to arrive at the Marshalls warehouse by the 40th day to get a refund.
Beware that not all online items from Marshalls are eligible for return. When you’re shopping online, Marshalls will let you know if something can’t be returned (usually this applies to final sale items in the Clearance section).
You can only return your items to Marshalls, not a sister store like T.J.Maxx or HomeGoods.
Although Marshalls has sister stores including T.J.Maxx, HomeGoods, Sierra, and HomeSense, you can only return something you bought at Marshalls to a Marshalls store. This rule also applies to Marshalls online orders, which you can either return to a Marshalls store or through the mail.

You must have a receipt to return something to Marshalls.
As is the case with most stores, you must have your receipt if you want to make a return.
If you lost your receipt, you’ll need to provide the cashier with a valid government-issued photo ID as well as your name, address, and signature. If they approve the return, you’ll get store credit for the item.
Items must have tags attached for a full refund.
Just like at most retailers, the tags have to be attached to the items to get a refund. If the tags aren’t attached, there’s a good chance Marshalls will deny your return.
To avoid this, make sure the items you buy both in store and online have tags attached. If they don’t, reach out to Marshalls Customer Service as soon as possible so they can help you.
Your items can’t be used or worn.
If you want to return an item, don’t wear, wash, or otherwise damage it in a way that makes it unsellable. This kinda goes without saying since the tags have to be attached, too.
Marshalls’ holiday return policy is different from their general return policy.
Thanks to Marshalls’ generous holiday return policy, you can return any in-store purchases you make from Oct. 9 – Dec. 24, 2022, all the way until Jan. 25, 2023. For online purchases, anything you buy between Oct. 9 – Dec. 25, 2022, can be returned until Feb. 3, 2023.
But that means if you buy anything on or after Dec. 26, 2022, it’s covered under the regular return policy, which has a 30-day window for in-store purchases and a 40-day window for online.

Exceptions to the Marshalls Return Policy

If you bought an item that was noted as a “final sale,” you can’t return it. Use caution when shopping the Marshalls Clearance section if you’re not sure you’ll want to keep something — especially when you’re shopping online.

You can’t return in-store purchases through the mail.
If you bought something at a brick-and-mortar Marshalls store, you can’t return it through the mail. You’ll have to visit any Marshalls store to make a return.
Items over $1,000 can’t get returned in store.
If you bought something for over $1,000 at Marshalls (like this fancy Jura coffee machine or this Chloé Edith designer bag), you can’t return it in a Marshalls store. Instead, you’ll need to reach out to Marshalls Customer Service so they can help you return it properly and get a refund.
Handbags over $499.99 and special occasion gowns will require help from Customer Service.
If you bought a purse for over $499.99 or long special occasion gowns, you can’t return them in store, either. You’ll need to reach out to Marshalls Customer Service for help making your return.
Opened or used beauty items can’t get returned.
If you bought a makeup or skincare product and opened it, you cannot return it. Make sure you want to keep the item before you open it. If you notice the item has been tampered with before you buy it, alert a Marshalls employee so they can find you a different unopened item.
Gift cards are not eligible for returns.
In case you were wondering, if you got a Marshalls gift card, you can’t return it for cash. If you really don’t want the gift card, I would suggest regifting it to someone who would or selling it on Raise.com.
