While Marshalls has some incredible discounted finds, there’s always a chance you’ll buy something that you want to return later. Luckily, the Marshalls return policy is pretty straightforward, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll get your money back. It works pretty similarly to the T.J.Maxx return policy since the two are sister stores, but you should know that the two policies are not interchangeable.
The short story is that at Marshalls, you’ll get 30 – 40 days from the day you purchased the item to return it. The exact number of days will depend on whether you shop in-store or from Marshalls online. (I should mention here that the Ross return policy can be a little more forgiving — in some cases, giving you 60 – 90 days for returns because of how their computer system is set up.)
But I’ll break down the full Marshalls return policy for you here, answering all the common questions that come up. With these tips in hand, you can feel confident making returns at Marshalls and getting your money back.

1. How long do I have to return an item to Marshall’s?
The amount of time you have to make a Marshalls return depends on whether you shop in-store or online.
You have 30 days to return an item you bought in-store for a refund.
As with many return policies, you’ll have 30 days from the day you bought an item in-store at Marshalls to return it for a full refund. To return your item, you’ll need your receipt and the tags attached.
If you try to return something after the 30-day window passes, you won’t get a refund — but you’ll get store credit as long as you have your receipt.
You have 40 days to return an item you bought from Marshalls online.
If you bought an item at Marshalls.com, you have 40 days from the date you placed your order to return it for a full refund (unless otherwise noted on the packing slip).
Marshalls accepts online returns with either your receipt (which comes as a packing slip) or your shipping confirmation email. Returns by mail are accepted if they arrive at the Marshalls warehouse within 40 days of your order date. This means you can’t ship it back 40 days later — the items have to arrive at the Marshalls warehouse by Day 40 to get a refund.
TIP: Beware that not all online items from Marshalls are eligible for return. When you’re shopping online, Marshalls will let you know if you can’t return something (usually this applies to final sale items in the clearance section).
What is the Marshall’s return policy over 30 days?
You can still technically make a Marshall’s return after 30 days, but your refund might be smaller. That’s because you’ll only get merchandise credit (aka store credit) for the current selling price of the item on the day you return it — even if you paid a lot more for it 32 days ago.
What is the Marshall’s holiday return policy?
Thanks to Marshalls’ generous holiday return policy, you can return any in-store purchases you make from Oct. 8 – Dec. 24, 2023, all the way until Jan. 25, 2024. For online purchases, anything you buy between Oct. 8 – Dec. 25, 2023, can be returned until Feb. 4, 2023.
But that means if you buy anything on or after Dec. 26, 2023, it’s covered under the regular return policy, which has a 30-day window for in-store purchases and a 40-day window for online purchases.

How long will it take to get my refund?
If you return something to Marshalls in-store, expect to see the refund on your card within 10 to 14 days.
If you shipped something back to Marshalls via mail, it might take a bit longer. Once they receive your returned items at the warehouse, you’ll get a refund back to your card within 10 to 14 days.
2. What do I need to return an item to Marshall’s?
Marshall’s only explicitly mentions a tag policy when it comes to swimwear. In theory, that means you should be able to make a return even if you’ve already clipped the tag off anything else. But in reality, it’s all going to come down to the store manager standing in front of you.
As for a receipt, you should have it handy when you make a Marshall’s return. There is a workaround, though, in case you lost your receipt.
What if I lost my receipt?
If you lost your receipt, you’ll need to provide the cashier with a valid government-issued photo ID as well as your name, address, and signature. If they approve the return, you’ll get merchandise credit for the item at its current selling price.

3. How can I return an item that I bought online?
You can return your online order to a Marshall’s physical store location within 40 days of purchase. Or you can return it by mail (but this is not recommended due to the $11.99 return shipping fee!).
If you insist on doing your return by mail, use the return shipping label that Marshalls included on your receipt and drop your package off at the shipping carrier indicated on the label. Make sure you include your receipt or a copy of your shipping confirmation email inside the package.
TIP: If you bought something at a physical Marshalls store, you can’t return it through the mail. You’ll have to visit a Marshalls store to make a return, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same one where you bought it.
Does Marshall’s do free return shipping?
No, they do not. You’ll be charged a whopping $11.99 in return shipping fees, which will be deducted from your refund.
If you want a full refund when you make a return, dodge the shipping fees by returning your online order at your local Marshall’s store.

4. Can I return an item that I used or wore?
No, you can’t return a Marshalls item that you used or wore — or otherwise left in “unsellable” condition.
5. Are there exceptions to Marshall’s return policy?
If you bought an item that was noted as a “final sale,” you can’t return it at all. Always use caution when shopping the Marshalls clearance section if you’re not sure you’ll want to keep something — especially when you’re shopping online. That’s where you’ll find most of the final sale items.
There are a few additional exceptions beyond this first obvious one.
What is Marshall’s return policy for gift cards?
If you have a Marshalls gift card, you can’t return it for cash. Really don’t want that gift card? I suggest regifting it to someone or selling it on Raise.com.
If the gift card has a really low balance and you live in one of these states, Marshall’s may be required to give you cash back by state law:
California: Refunds for cards with a balance of $10 or less (with an original balance above $10).
Colorado: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
Maine: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
Massachusetts: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less (or after you’ve redeemed 90% of the gift card’s original value).
Montana: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
New Jersey: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
Oregon: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
Puerto Rico: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
Rhode Island: Refunds for cards with a balance of $1 or less.
Texas: Refunds for cards with a balance of $2.50 or less (with an original balance above $5).
Vermont: Refunds for cards with a balance of $1 or less.
Washington: Refunds for cards with a balance of $5 or less.
Can I return beauty products at Marshall’s?
If you’ve opened the beauty products or they appear to be tampered with, Marshall’s won’t accept your return.
If the beauty products are still fully sealed, they will fall under the 30-day return policy (or 40 days if you bought them online).
Can I return luxury items?
If you bought something for over $1,000 at Marshalls (like these Valentino Garavani boots or this Burberry designer bag), you can’t return it in a Marshalls store.
Instead, you’ll need to reach out to Marshalls Customer Service so they can help you return it properly and get a refund.
What other items can you not return in-store?
There are three other items you can’t return in-store. You’ll need to get in contact with Marshall’s customer service if you want to return any of the following:
6. How do I contact Marshall’s customer service?
Whether you want to return a designer handbag or need to report an online order that arrived damaged, you can get in touch with Marshall’s customer service via live chat.
For issues with online orders, you can call 1-833-888-0776. For issues with an in-store purchase or return, call 1-888-627-7425.
At both numbers, representatives are available from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
7. Can I return my Marshalls purchase to T.J.Maxx?
Even though Marshalls’ sister stores include T.J.Maxx, HomeGoods, Sierra, and HomeSense, you can only return something you bought at Marshalls to a Marshalls store.
This rule also applies to Marshalls online orders, which you can only return to a Marshalls store or through the mail.
