Between the Pokemon cards and the rare Squishmallows, I’m sure you’re thinking there’s no way you can handle getting up to speed on another new toy. But we found a whole bunch of mystery toys — called blind bags — that are sure to make the perfect stocking stuffer or birthday gift year-round.
Remember the hype around trading cards in the ’90s? That’s sorta how blind bags are today. Blind bags come in a variety of styles, brands, and characters, including Squishmallow merch, Disney blind bags, and more. Because of this variety, there are all sorts of stores where you can scoop some up.
Mystery toys like blind bags can range from as low as $3 all the way up to $33 — depending on where you buy them and the type you’re purchasing. But we’ll explain all that here!

What are mystery toys and blind bags?
The draw of blind bags and mystery toys is that you can’t see — or figure out — what’s inside their bag or box. Mystery toys can be totally addicting because you never know what you’re going to get. And if you’re hunting for a specific character, then you’ll easily get caught up in the hype of continually buying the mystery bags until you find what you want.
Brands often come out with multiple “series” of the same style in a blind box. For example, Disney Cutie Cuffs have two series — each containing six potential characters — for a total of 12 possible characters you can collect.
And not all blind bags are the same. Some are scented! For those, try to figure out what’s inside by squeezing the packaging to release the scent from the tiny air holes in the bottom of the bag. You’ll often get a hint at what’s inside!
TIP: Give yourself a budget or number of mystery toys you’ll buy and stick to it. That way you won’t go overboard and end up with 100 Mickey Mouses when you’re searching for Pooh.
You can buy blind bags at more than a dozen stores.
The majority of blind bags you’ll find are in the store — if you’re lucky enough to find them in stock, of course. Pretty much any place that sells toys or trading cards should carry some form of mystery toy. Even some grocery stores, like Fred Meyer, carry blind bags.
Where to buy blind bags & mystery toys:
- Best Buy
- Box Lunch
- Five Below
- Hot Topic
TIP: Sometimes you’ll have to know when retailers restock their shelves in order to scoop up blind bags before they’re gone. Kinda like how you have to know when to shop the Squishmallow drop at Five Below.
Create magic with Disney Blind Bags for $2.18 and up.
If you can’t go to the happiest place on Earth, why not create it at home with a Disney blind bag? The variety of Disney mystery toys is pretty magical. You can normally find them throughout the toy section or near the trading cards.
Disney Cutie Cuffs
Disney Cutie Cuffs remind me of a lot of slap bracelets from back in the day but with a little plushy on them. If you’re looking for a surprise toy for a younger child, I’d lean toward these since they don’t contain any choking hazards. But even my grandma would love these, so really you can’t go wrong.
There are two series currently. Most recently we spotted series 2 Disney Cutie Cuffs in Target near the toy section for $9.99.
Disney Squish ‘Ums
Most recently, we spotted new Disney Squish ‘Ums with Mickey Mouse, Pooh, Lotso, Stitch, Baymax, and Squirt at Target for $6.99 each. They came in a blue cube and are ultra squishy! Almost like a marshmallow (just don’t eat them). At the time of writing this post, these weren’t located in stores. New series come out all the time, so stay tuned.

The Disney Doorables contain mystery Disney characters behind multiple doors. Sets include five, six, or seven Disney Doorables figures in a house-themed blind box. There are 62 characters to collect across four different series, and some even have a special scented edition. Doorables are available at Macy’s, ShopDisney, Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Five Below. They retail for $10.99, but you can catch them on sale for as low as $2.18.
Disney Mash’ems in a Ball
Like the Squish ‘Ums, the Mash’ems are squishy, too. They remind me a lot of a stress ball. Disney carries the Mash’ems themed for certain movies. For example, there is a Frozen Mash’ems line that contains all characters from Frozen.
Build in mystery with Lego blind bags for $3.74 and up.
You can even find Lego blind bags which contain all the pieces to build a character … you just don’t know what you’re getting till you open it. They come in a variety of characters like Ninjago, UniKitty, Mario, Harry Potter, DC Super Heros, Simpsons, and so many more!
Lego Minifigure blind bags start at $3.74 and typically stay around that price within all retailers. Since these have small Lego pieces, these blind bags are better for those 5 and older. Depending on what character is potentially in the blind bag, they could even be fun gifts for adults.
