DSW — aka Designer Shoe Warehouse — is closing stores.

Don’t worry; there’s no threat of DSW going out of business like Payless last year, but the shoe store has suffered during the coronavirus pandemic and needs to reduce their operating costs.

Play your (gift) cards right, and you could be in for some great deals.

Here’s what you need to know:

DSW announced they’ll be closing 10 – 15% of stores.

DSW store front

In a recent call with investors, DSW said they’re planning to close between 10 – 15% of their locations.

In the U.S. there are 254 DSW stores, so this means between 50 and 80 stores will close.

DSW didn’t share the specific time frame for these closures.

In the meantime, they said they aren’t planning to open any new stores for the “foreseeable future.”

Look out for closing sales & online clearance.

As stores close, expect those locations to hold closing sales.

Full-on liquidation sales might happen, but it’s more likely that the affected stores would have closing sales, with much of the inventory shifting to other DSWs and the online store.

DSW.com has thousands of clearance items available (more than 3,000 just in women’s clearance), so expect those offerings to increase.

Make the deals even better with 14% discounts on DSW gift cards.

Raise.com has DSW gift cards, where you pay up to 14% less than the amount on the card.

If your store is closing, or if you’re just taking advantage of online clearance, that can turn into some pretty big savings.

For example, a $50 gift card costs just over $43 on Raise. I used it to buy a Jessica Simpson wedge sandal for $19.98 (reg. $59.99) and a floral sneaker by Sketchers for $29.98 (reg. $44.99).

So, for just $43.02, I ended up with about $105 worth of DSW shoes.

Don’t forget, DSW might be at your grocery store.

Doesn’t look like DSW is planning to expand their store-within-a-store concept like they’d originally planned, but for now, you can find DSW inside of six different Hy-Vee locations.
