Sure, fireworks get lots of oohs and ahhs, but the bonkers-cheap gas at Sheetz was the real crowd-pleaser on July 4 .

Car owners were delighted to see the company’s July 3 announcement on their Facebook page that they were celebrating the Fourth of July with $1.776 per gallon gas — a number that, of course, is a nod to the year 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

There are 630 Sheetz locations in six states, and on July 4, their gas pumps showed $1.776 across (almost) all fuel types.

Although the promo is over for 2023 — and we have no idea if we’ll see this again in 2024 or beyond — it was pretty exciting. Here’s how it all went down:

Sheetz only charged $1.776 per gallon on the Fourth of July — half the national average gas price.

A Sheetz store front

The one-day-only promotion started at 12:01 a.m. on July 4th and ran throughout the day, or until promotional gallons ran out. There were massive lines to get the cheap gas, with hours-long waits.

You didn’t have to do anything special or have any kind of membership to get the price. You could fill up at this discounted rate at any of the Sheetz locations, with gas stations spread across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The $1.776 per gallon applied to a number of different fuel grades, including regular, E85 (flex fuel), Unleaded 88, mid-grade, and premium fuel grades. The promo basically gave drivers half off the national average price for gas, which was $3.529 per gallon as of July 4, 2023, according to AAA. It was even bigger savings for the premium varieties.

Diesel and ethanol gas wasn’t included in the promotional price.

The promotional pricing wasn’t applicable to diesel or Ethanol Free (E0) fuel. This exception seems to be based on the different cost structures and demand factors associated with these specific fuel types.
