Bloomingdale’s has a pretty forgiving store return policy, but there are a few details you should know before you start shopping at this luxury department store. While you’ll have a full 90 days to complete most returns, Bloomingdale’s return policy window shortens quite a bit when it comes to certain designer brands like Michael Kors and Versace.
But don’t worry — we read all the fine print and will explain everything you need to know before you hit “add to cart” at Bloomingdale’s.

1. Bloomingdale’s return policy gives you 90 days to make most returns.
Unless it’s stated otherwise, full-price and general sale items at Bloomingdale’s have a 90-day return window.
For anything marked “final sale,” you can still return it, but you’ll only have a 30-day return window. For area rugs, the return window shortens to just 14 days, and furniture returns must get started within three days of delivery.
2. For some designer brands, the return window shortens to 30 days — or even less.
If you’re buying name-brand items, be aware that you might have a limited return window. More than 50 of the big-name designer brands at Bloomingdale’s have a return window of just 30 days, instead of the usual 90 days. Here’s a partial list of designer brands with a 30-day return window:
A few of the designers have even more restrictions: Chanel products must be returned within 14 days, and items from Oscar De La Renta and Giambattista Valli can only get returned if you purchased the product at full price — not on sale.
TIP: Bloomingdale’s has a whole list of designer return restrictions on their website, so double-check it before making a purchase you’re not completely sure about. If you’re shopping in store, your cashier can also let you know the return policy for each item you’re purchasing.
3. You can return items with or without a receipt to a Bloomingdale’s store.
You can return items with or without a receipt at Bloomingdale’s, similar to how the Nordstrom return policy works. But the way you get your Bloomingdale’s refund will change based on whether or not you have your receipt.
If you return an item with a receipt within the allotted time window, you’ll get a refund back to your original form of payment within a week or so. However, if you return something without a receipt, you’ll only get store credit for the lowest price the item sold for in the last 180 days. You’ll also need to show your photo ID. So it’s best to keep your receipts to maximize your refund!
If you used your Bloomingdale’s card to make the purchase, you don’t usually need a receipt. The sales associate will be able to look up your card information and refund the balance back to you.
TIP: Keep in mind that after several no-receipt returns, the store may limit your future returns.
4. To return orders by mail, head to Bloomingdale’s online portal.
Returning orders by mail is easy, but just remember that you’ll have to pay for the return shipping costs at Bloomingdale’s. Here’s how to make a return by mail:
- Log into your Bloomingdale’s account online.
- Select “My account.”
- Select your previous orders, then the individual items you want to return.
If you aren’t logged in or don’t have an account, their Easy Returns page makes it easy to find your order. You will need your order number, which you can find in your confirmation email if you checked out as a guest or on the gift receipt if you received the item as a gift. Once you locate the order, you’ll be able to select the items you want to return and choose a way to get your refund.

5. You can even return Bloomingdale’s gift cards.
Unlike most other retailers, you can return a Bloomingdale’s gift card as long as the full balance is still on the card and you can provide the receipt. The balance will get credited back to your original form of payment.
6. Be aware of Bloomingdale’s items you can never return.
While Bloomingdale’s does have a pretty forgiving return policy overall, there are a few things they won’t let you return — ever. Bloomingdale’s does not accept returns or exchanges on these items:
- Clothing that has been worn, washed, or altered
- Clothing with the “B-Tag” (their security tag) removed
- Face masks
- Food or beverage items
Also, if you return a purchase that qualified you for a free gift item, you’ll need to return the bonus item with your original purchase. You can opt to keep the bonus item, but you’ll be charged for it.
