Looking for free family events to keep the kids busy? Find events like Lowe’s Kids’ Workshops, Home Depot’s Kids Workshops, JCPenney Kid Zone Crafts, and even Lego free in-store events for kids.
Lego occasionally holds in-store activities for kids called Lego Build or Lego Make and Take events. Kids get a free Lego set (that isn't available to the public) to build at Lego stores or Barnes & Noble locations, which they can take home.
Here's everything you need to know about the next in-store Lego Build event at Lego stores and Barnes & Noble locations.
What exactly is a Lego Build or Make and Take event anyway?
Lego Build or Make and Take It events are in-store opportunities for kids to receive free promotional Lego kits that they can build in a group setting. These events typically run about two hours, but you don’t need to stay that long. Contact your nearby Lego store to see if they're taking part of this weekend's event.
The next in-store Lego Build event is Sunday, Aug. 24 (noon - 2 p.m. local) at Lego stores — build a Box of Crayons.
Lego stores run free Lego Build events occasionally, although there’s no real rhyme or reason to when these are scheduled. The next Lego Build event will be a free Box of Crayons on Sunday, Aug. 24 (noon - 2 p.m. local).
Note this event will be held from noon - 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Lego Store Garden State in Paramus NJ. and at the Lego Store University Place in Orem, UT.

Lego Build in-store events are offered on a first-come, first serve basis, so get there early.
Because these events are so popular, they're offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. That means you'll need to show up early if you want a chance for your kid(s) to participate. You'll need to contact your local store to confirm event details.
Is there an age limit for a Lego Build event?
No, there’s no age limit for these events. However, Lego notes the age group for which the models are best suited. For example, the upcoming Box of Crayons event has a recommended age group of 6 and older.
Some Lego Build events take place at select Barnes & Noble locations.
Lego stores aren't the only place you'll find Lego Make and Take events. You'll find some build events at Barnes & Noble locations.
To find out if your local store is participating, click on the Stores & Events tab at the top left of the Barnes & Noble homepage. From there you can search by zip code, store name, or event name to see if any of the locations near you are participating, as well as the date and time of their particular event.
The next Barnes & Noble Lego Build event (Bluey Duck Cake) will take place this weekend; Aug. 22 - 24.
Barnes & Noble locations will have a Lego Build Bluey Duck Cake event this weekend (Aug. 22 - 24). This event is absolutely free, no purchase necessary.
Note some locations are holding the event earlier such as the B&N Bluhawk Overland Park, KS location. Their Bluey Duck Cake event is Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Since the dates, and times for this event vary, you'll need to contact your local store to confirm.
Lego Build events at Barnes & Noble require you to sign up in advance.
Unlike Lego store events that are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis you'll need to sign up for a spot for the B&N Lego Build event.
We can't stress enough how popular anything involving free Legos is, so it’s imperative you sign up for your local event in advance. Some participating Barnes & Noble locations allow you to call them to secure a spot. Others require you visit in-store ahead of the event to sign up. Whichever method works best at your location, sign up as early as possible. Only one Lego kit is provided per child registered.
Turn your extra Lego pieces into a Lego gift card with the Lego Brick Take Back program.
Whether you get your legos from free Lego Build events, you inherit them, or you buy sets on the regular, you can turn them into cash (technically a Lego gift card). Right now, Lego is offering a limited-time Brick Take Back program that offers eGift cards for used Legos that are clean and undamaged. It only takes a few steps, and you can earn up to $100 per trade-in.
Here's how it works:
-
Disassemble ALL Legos and elements, including tires, wheels, doors, and windows. Minifigure accessories must be separated from Minifigures and Mini dolls.
-
Pack your Lego bricks, elements, base plates, minifigures, and mini-dolls in a cardboard box.
-
Mail your box with a FREE shipping label or shipping QR code that you'll receive in your email during the trade-in process.
-
Take your package to your nearby UPS location.
-
Watch for your eGift card(s) in your email within about seven business days.
What you get in return depends on the weight of your Legos. The following figures are based on the $4 per pound price we found on the Lego website. The final amount of your gift card will be based on the actual weight of eligible Lego bricks received.
-
5 lb — $20 gift card
-
10 lb — $40 gift card
-
15 lb — $60 gift card
-
20 lb — $80 gift card
-
25 lb — $100 gift card
There's no limit to how many Lego bricks you can trade in. However, each trade-in can only weigh a maximum 25 pounds worth of bricks.
The Lego Brick Take Back program won't accept Lego Duplo bricks or elements; connected Lego bricks or elements; or non-Lego bricks, elements, or toys.
