Pet parents, rejoice — you won’t have to leave your pup in the car (which can be dangerous!) or at home when you go shopping.

While not every store will allow your fuzzy friend to come inside, it’s always good to know about the ones that do so you can plan accordingly.

I’ve got a list of which stores allow pets and how you can find local pet-friendly businesses as well.

Pet policies between locations may vary. Since each store follows their local health codes, you need to contact stores near you for their specific pet policy on bringing (non-service) animals with you.

First things first: Know the rules for bringing a pet into a store.

Most pet-friendly stores allow shoppers to bring only one dog, which must be leashed (some allow carriers) and be well-behaved. Stores also expect you to be up to date on your dog’s vaccinations, never leave your pet unattended, and clean up after your pet if necessary.

Pet-friendly Pet Stores

This is an easy one. Most pet stores, including major players like Petco and Petsmart, allow you to bring your pet in for services and shopping.

Chances are if it’s a pet store, your pet’s allowed inside.

Pet-friendly Home Improvement Stores

Whether you’re shopping for lumber or a pair of overalls, you can take your dog into home improvement and hardware stores such as Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, and Tractor Supply Co.

Although Home Depot‘s dog policy states that only service dogs are permitted, many stores allow dogs regardless.

Pet-friendly Clothing Stores

I found several popular clothing stores that welcome pets, with some saying I could only bring my dog if they were allowed to pet her.

Pet-friendly Specialty Stores

A wide range of specialty stores are pet friendly.

Pet-friendly Home Stores

Not many home stores welcome pets, which shouldn’t be too surprising considering some pets can take out breakable items with a wag of their tail.

Pet-friendly Pharmacies

Pharmacies big and small, typically only allow service dogs. However, after speaking with reps from each pharmacy chain, none has a pet policy and told me that allowing pets is up to the store manager, so you’ll need to contact your local CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid to ask whether they allow pets.

Use BringFido.com to find local pet-friendly stores.

BringFido.com can help you locate large and small pet-friendly stores in your area. You have to type in your town or city to search.

Major Retailers with No Pets Allowed

Retailers have secrets; one being that not every retailer welcomes pets, most likely because having food products and animals in the same place is a big no-no in the eyes of the Food and Drug Administration. Service dogs are the exception.

Don’t feel too bad for your pet, though. You can still spoil your cat or dog with these deals from the first-ever Amazon pet day.

Grocery stores with no pets allowed

Due to FDA regulations, pets are not permitted in grocery stores. Service animals are the exception.
