Recently, J.Crew converted a portion of their full-line stores into factory outlet stores and slapped the label “J.Crew Mercantile” over the doors.

It’s like they know we don’t want to pay big bucks for their stuff.

Merchandise at J.Crew Mercantile is what you’d find in J.Crew outlets, not full-line J.Crew stores, but do we clearance people care? Nope. Just tell us how to save all the money.

1. Get 15% off two times when you sign up for J.Crew and J.Crew Mercantile emails.

Since they operate independently, you’ll get one code when you sign up for J.Crew emails and one when you sign up for J.Crew Mercantile emails.

Only drawback is that you have to use J.Crew codes on the J.Crew site and J.Crew Merc codes on the Merc site.

2. Become a J.Crew Insider to get 2.5% cash back, free shipping and a 20%-off birthday code.

This is slightly confusing, but I’ll make it simple. There are two routes to the same destination of discounts and free shipping.

You can join Factory First or J.Crew Rewards. If you join one, you’re joining both.

It’s worth signing up just for the free shipping, which otherwise would be a $5 flat rate on purchases of $100 or more.

3. Rack up points at J.Crew Mercantile and spend them at J.Crew.

Points are the only thing J.Crew and J.Crew Mercantile really share in common.

You’ll rack up points for purchases you make at either store, so the best money-saving strategy is to earn points for purchases you make at J.Crew Mercantile and then spend your points on splurge purchases at J.Crew.

4. Stack up to two promo codes online.

And they can both be percent-off codes, which is typically impossible at stores.

5. Stock up on jeans when you can get 60% savings.

During the holidays, you’ll see jeans on sale for up to 60% off.

If the store doesn’t have your size when you’re there, ask them to order it online for you, and it’ll ship to your house for free.

6. Look for steep discounts on J.Crew clothing at Nordstrom Rack.

Since Nordstrom’s full line store now sells J.Crew items, they can end up at Nordstrom Rack when they don’t sell at Nordstrom.

A perfect storm is finding J.Crew items on Rack clearance racks. You can save up to 85%, even online. Search by brand (“J.Crew”), then sort by “Best Value” to see the savings you can get online at Rack.

7. Download Paribus to get money back when your J.Crew items go on sale.

J.Crew’s price adjustment period is pretty tight — 7 days, compared to the typical 14 days we see at most retailers.

But, if you wait a few weeks to buy a full-price item online, there’s a chance it’ll go on sale — if it does, Paribus will be right there ready to ask for the difference on your behalf (for free).

If you miss the 7-day mark, consider returning your item if the price drops within 60 days (30 days for in-store purchases) and then re-buy it at the sale price.

8. Get an extra 1.5% back when you shop online through Ibotta.

Of course, 1.5% isn’t anything to throw a party about, but when you’re already getting 2.5% back through J.Crew Rewards, 1.5% will bring your total to a solid 4% back!

Open the Ibotta app and shop J.Crew online through the app.

9. Pay with a discounted gift card and save an additional 12.5%.

Buy a J.Crew gift card from Gift Card Granny and you’ll save an extra 12.5% on top of J.Crew promo codes, Ibotta rebates and J.Crew Rewards cash back.

This makes for up to 16.5% in potential savings when you shop doing all three of these. Double it if you’re using your 15%-off welcome offer too.

10. Teacher or a college student? Jump on the 15% discount.

Teachers and college students can get 15% off everything they buy at J.Crew Mercantile.

You can’t get this discount at J.Crew stores, which is a bummer, but it’s good on anything you can find at J.Crew Mercantile.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for promotional 20%-off teacher and student discounts around June.

11. J.Crew tags don’t have dots; J.Crew Merc tags have two dots.

In case you’re trying to buy J.Crew items secondhand online, always ask for a picture of the clothing tag.

True J.Crew items don’t have anything but the words “J.Crew.” Mercantile clothing has two dots beneath the words “J.Crew.”
