News broke on Sept. 25 that Starbucks would be closing 1% of their stores this month. At first glance, that may seem like a small number, but considering the chain’s nearly 18,000 U.S. locations, it’s pretty significant.

Brian Niccol, former Chipotle CEO and new Starbucks CEO as of September 2024, announced in a blog post that the closures will happen in stores “where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance.”

Here’s everything we know about the closures, along with a brief breakdown of how many stores are closing in each state.

What KCL Experts Say You Should Know

Right now, Starbucks hasn't confirmed the full list of store closure locations. The information we have has been gathered online publicly — most from Starbucks employees on Reddit. Here's what we know so far:

  • Over 500 stores are reportedly set to close in 2025, according to a public Google spreadsheet that's being updated in real-time by employees.

    • Of the total stores, 441 are in the United States and 56 are located in Canada.

  • The states with the most closures include California, with 155 reported closures, and New York, with 35 reported closures.

  • The first two publicly confirmed stores were the Reserve Roastery and Reserve store in the chain’s hometown of Seattle.

  • Store closures will be reflected in the Starbucks app on Sunday, Sept. 28.

  • Store managers were notified on Sept. 25 and shared the news with employees the same day.
