That dumb groundhog said it’s supposed to be an early spring, but I’m still waiting.
The good news is, getting warmer weather is easier than ever now that Southwest Airlines has started flying to Hawaii — with some seriously amazing fares.
Start packing as you read this.
Southwest welcomed its service to Hawaii with $49 one-way fares.
On March 17, the low-cost airline will start its flights between Oakland, Calif. and Honolulu. It’s a major part of Southwest’s plan to increase flights 5 percent this year.
Flights from San Jose to Kahului (Maui) start in May.
Prices for those aren’t anywhere near $49, though, as May/June prices range between $189 and $314.
People jumped right on the introductory fares.
All of March sold out within hours of the $49 deal going live, and only a couple of April dates were available by midday — and they weren’t $49.
Even the regular rates will beat out the other airlines — for the most part.
A one-way flight on April 19 was available for $274. That’s still a better price than the other competing airlines doing the same flight — Alaska Airlines at $324 and Hawaiian Airlines at $325 — although Alaska has $99 one-way flights on the regular.
