It’s true: I hate Walmart. However–I admit–I have walked through its crowded aisles on more than one occasion recently. I couldn’t help myself! The deals are sometimes too good to pass up. Whether you love it or hate it, Walmart is really hard to beat when it comes to low prices. With so many ways to save, it’s no wonder Walmart and I continue to have a love-hate relationship. Read on to learn everything you need to know about shopping and saving at Walmart.

1. First, 10 Reasons I Hate Couponing at Walmart.

I know, I know…for those of you who absolutely love Walmart, the title of this video may hurt your heart a little bit. BUT, there are some great tips for couponing correctly at Walmart here—especially for newbies. Tune in and check it out!

2. Make Walmart’s coupon policy your best friend.

If a coupon is your weapon of choice against high grocery prices, then consider a store’s coupon policy your indispensable sidekick. Let Walmart’s coupon policy help you out when that cashier isn’t giving in to your coupon know-how or when the manager can use an update on the latest coupon policies. Make sure to bring it with you every time you shop!

3. Use manufacturer and competitor coupons.

This is one of the wonderful things about Wally World! Walmart accepts manufacturer coupons from the Sunday coupon inserts as well as printable manufacturer coupons. They’ll also accept current competitor coupons that specify a price for a specific item. Walmart will not, however, accept a competitor coupon for cents/dollars off or a percentage off.

Tip: Ask your local store for a list of those whom they consider local competitors (it varies by region).

4. Take advantage of rebate app offers.

Rebate apps like Ibotta and Checkout 51 add a whole new layer of savings to your purchases. If you don’t already use them when you shop for groceries, you totally should. I’ve earned hundreds of dollars in rebates just by using Ibotta. All you have to do to unlock offers is take quick surveys, watch short ads, or answer questions with a sentence or two. After you purchase the promoted product, upload a snapshot of your receipt, and watch the money roll in! I’m telling you–it’s super easy!

5. Price match.

I think everyone knows that you can price match at Walmart, but many people don’t realize just how convenient it is. In fact, I think it’s actually kind of fun. I see it almost like haggling, except I’m pretty confident that I’ll win in the end.

When you price match at Walmart, you don’t even need to bring the competitor’s ad—just let the cashier know about the competitor’s lower price, and they can look up the price for you right at the register. And now that Walmart price matches online competitors like Amazon.com, I’ve found it extra simple to find the lowest price anywhere.

Hint: Download the Amazon app and check each product’s price online before making the purchase.

Savings Catcher

When I said price matching at Walmart is convenient, I meant it. Walmart even has an app devoted to ensuring you get the best price every time you shop. Just upload your receipt into the Savings Catcher app (I like to do this before I even leave the parking lot), and Walmart will check competitor prices for a lower amount. If they find a lower price, they’ll give you the difference. For the 411 on Savings Catcher, read this awesome article.

Note: As of August 2016, Walmart has phased out price matching in 800 of their stores. Check with your local store about their price matching policy and remember, price matching is up to the store manager.

6. Watch for price adjustments.

So you found a really great deal at Walmart but then a few days later realized the item is way cheaper somewhere else. Don’t fret! Walmart allows for price adjustments within seven days of your purchase date—and there’s an app to help you make sure you really did get the best deal. It’s called Slice, and it has saved me so much time. I’m all for stalking prices before I make a purchase, but I don’t enjoy stalking prices after I’ve already handed over my cash.
