If I was captured by a bunch of retail executives and my only hope for release was to name my favorite one of them all—honestly—I would say “Target” with no hesitation.

I just love Target. I love Target for their Cartwheel app, their REDCard, their great prices, their awesome variety, their cute clothes and shoes…I could go on and on.

Now there’s even one more reason to love Target—their new extended return policy!

What’s changed?

Target’s former return policy permitted returns for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase. This new extended return policy permits returns for a period of 365 days from the date of purchase.

Also, if you need to return Gift Registry items, you get a full 365 days from the designated event date (not from your date of purchase!) to return your items.

Extended return on Target brands!

Target has 32 popular in-house brands, including Xhilaration, Mossimo, Merona, Archer Farms, AVA & VIV, up & up, Room Essentials, and many more (see Target for the full in-house brands list). The new extended returns policy applies ONLY to Target’s in-house brands.

And if you purchase Target brand items using your Target REDCard, you’ll even get an additional 30 days to return items—for a total of 395 days!

Why extended returns—and why now?

Target’s Chief Merchandising Officer, Kathee Tesija, answers this question simply, “At Target, we’re putting our guests first and are committed to offering a shopping experience that’s inspiring and rooted in ease.”

Ultimately, the goal of the new return policy is to offer loyal Target customers (like me!) additional convenience as well as an extended assurance of the high quality of Target in-house branded products.

How to return your items.

The return process itself is simple and easy. Just take your receipt and the item to any Target store within 365 days of the purchase date to get your refund.

If you’re returning items you’ve received as part of setting up a Target Gift Registry, you can bring in your gift receipt OR your Gifts Purchased List (you can print this in-store or online from your registry) to get your refund.

What about returns for coupon purchases?

Target has not announced any changes to how they handle coupons during the returns process.

Target’s official returns policy as it relates to coupons reads:

  • If you used a manufacturer’s coupon to purchase an item and decide to return that item, you’ll receive a refund for the amount you paid for the item plus the amount of the coupon. The amount of the coupon may be refunded in the form of a Target GiftCard.
  • If you used a Target coupon to purchase an item and decide to return that item, you’ll receive a refund for the price of the item, minus the coupon value.
