Use this resource to know whether you’re overspending on wrapping paper this year and to ensure you’re getting the best price available. Which, by the way, is just $0.03 per square foot! (That is, if you’re shopping before the holidays — more on that later).

• Best Deals: Walmart, Target, and Dollar Tree are all tied at just $0.03 per square foot before promotions.
• Right Up There: Costco offers $0.05 per square foot before promotions.
• Honorable Mentions: Walgreens and Hobby Lobby have $0.05 per square foot if you shop during sales.

Walmart, Target, and Dollar Tree tie for the best deals on wrapping paper at $0.03 per square foot.

This year, three retailers offer wrapping paper for just $0.03 per square foot. It should come as no surprise (because this retailer won for the cheapest gift wrap last year), that Walmart is still one of the best places to shop for wrapping paper.

But two other stores, Target and Dollar Tree, upped their game this year. Both lowered their prices to just $0.03 per square foot, beating their 2022 prices by $0.02.

If you see a wrapping paper you love this year, don’t be afraid to whip out your phone and do a little math. And we’re here to help.

Before you make a purchase, just divide the price by the total square footage. For example, if a roll of wrapping paper is $5 and you get 100 square feet, type 5 ÷ 100 into your calculator. Aim to spend no more than $0.05 per square foot.

A $0.03 per-square-foot roll is the best value we’ve seen, so that should be your goal if you want to get the best wrapping paper deals available. But with three major retailers offering wrapping paper for just $0.05 per square foot, you’re sure to easily score that price. We recommend not going over that threshold.

 

One of the best wrapping paper deals is at Walmart for $0.03 per square foot.

The 30-square-foot wrapping paper rolls for $0.98 from Holiday Time at Walmart are your best bet. They also have some larger 200-square-foot rolls for $6.48. This also works out to $0.03 per square foot, so snatch those up if you have a lot of wrapping to do this year.

You may be tempted to grab the 80-square-foot rolls for $5.48 to save room in your cart, but those work out to nearly $0.07 per square foot. So unless you score the $0.98 rolls or the 200-square-foot rolls, you’ll be paying extra.

Christmas wrapping paper at Target is down to $0.03 per square foot, even without a RedCard.

Target wrapping paper is much cheaper this year, coming in at just $0.03 per square foot compared to last year’s $0.05. You can get 220 square feet of wrapping paper for just $7. And, if you have a Target RedCard, that total price drops to $6.65 (and a lower $0.03 per square foot). But, even without a RedCard, it’s still an awesome deal, keeping up with Walmart.

For deals on smaller square footage, check Dollar Tree for $0.03 per square foot.

Dollar Tree also upped its game this year by introducing larger rolls for the same price as last year. In 2022, you could get 20 square feet of gift wrap for $1.25, or $0.05 per square foot. However, in 2023 you can now find a 37.5 square feet roll for $1.25. That brings the price per square foot all the way down to $0.03.

Every other week, find Hobby Lobby wrapping paper for $0.05 per square foot.

We know when everything goes on sale at Hobby Lobby, and they discount their wrapping paper up to 50% off during sales that happen every other week, dropping it from $9.99 to $4.99. With 100 square feet to a roll, that works out to $0.05 per square foot — a fair price. At the $9.99 price for 100 square feet, you’ll be spending $0.10 per square foot, so be sure to stock up during promo periods. In the past, we’ve even seen 60% off sales in the months leading to the holidays, bringing the price down to just $0.04.

Walgreens has a BOGO 40% off deal, costing you $0.05 per square foot.

Walgreens is on the naughty list so far in 2023. In previous years, Walgreens had a BOGO 50% off promotion on wrapping paper. When you bought two of their 3-pack rolls with 125 square feet at $6.99 each, you got a total of 250 square feet of wrapping paper for $10.49 after the promotion. This worked out to $0.04 per square foot.

Currently, we’re seeing shrinkflation in action. The 3-pack now has 25 square feet less, while still retailing for the same price. The promotion has also changed to buy on get one 40% off. With this new promo, you get 200 square feet for $11.18. That equals out to $0.05 per square foot. While not a bad deal, it’s certainly not as good as it used to be. Hopefully, we’ll see the buy one get one 50% off promotion make a comeback as we get closer to the holiday season.

Note that you can only shop this promotion in-store.

 

Shop in bulk at Costco for $0.05 per square foot.

If you prefer to shop at Costco you can still find decent prices. Last year, Costco sold 540 square feet of Kirkland Double-Sided Gift Wrap rolls for just $29.99, or $0.05 per square foot. This year you can find 270 square feet for $14.99. So despite offering smaller sizes this year, the cost per square foot has remained the same. Honestly, I prefer the smaller sizes so I don’t have to commit to so much paper, but that’s just me. The value is still the same.

Note that you can only shop this promotion in-store.

 

 

Only buy wrapping paper at Michaels if you’re in a pinch, and only during a BOGO sale — $0.07 per square foot is the best they can do.

Michaels used to offer 50-square-foot rolls for $5.99 or $0.12 per square foot before any sales. But this year we’re seeing shrinkflation once again. Currently, you can find 40 square feet of wrapping paper for $5.49 or $0.14 per square foot. While the overall price was lowered, the discount wasn’t proportional to the change in product size.

The only redeeming factor? Michaels usually offers a buy one get one promotion on wrapping paper. If you were to take advantage of the sale, you’d pay just $0.07 per square foot. That’s still a bit above the ideal price of $0.05 per square foot, but not the worst deal I’ve ever seen. Just be sure you’re only shopping when there’s a sale. (And there are always sales happening throughout the holiday season).

Skip Amazon at $0.10 or more per square foot.

We don’t normally suggest that you skip out on Amazon because they have some amazing deals. But during the holiday shopping season, wrapping paper does not seem to be one of them. Likely due to Amazon’s dynamic pricing model and increased demand this time of year, most wrapping paper is going for around $0.10 per square foot. That being said, definitely check Amazon for after-Christmas sales.

 

The absolute best time to shop for wrapping paper is after Christmas.

For the absolute best deals on wrapping paper, we recommend waiting until after-Christmas clearance sales. At Walmart, for example, we see 75% off the week after Christmas. This drops select wrapping paper to $0.25 per roll or just $0.01 per square foot. Yep. A PENNY.

I know that this info might not be so helpful now, but it’s good to know for next year!
