GameStop Will Give You Store Credit for an Old Shoe on Dec. 6 (Yes, Really)

We've definitely seen some crazy promos and unique freebies before (free candles for being a rewards member and free burritos for wearing a hockey jersey, for example). And now, GameStop is getting into the mix with an event they're calling "Trade Anything Day" on Dec. 6 , where you can trade in (almost) anything for store credit.

Here's what to know before you take advantage of this new promo.

What KCL Experts Think You Should Know

GameStop says they'll announce more details closer to the event, but in the meantime, here's what we know:

  • You can trade in almost anything, not just gaming stuff: GameStop is advertising this as a "No (OK, some) questions asked" trade-in event. So you don't have to trade in gaming stuff (like you do with GameStop's regular trade-in program). In fact, the post on the company's Instagram account shows a boot and a coffee mug.

  • There are some exceptions: The fine print excludes hazardous waste, liquids, alcohol and drugs, animals, dirty clothes, and a long list of electronics (this is not an opportunity to hand over your old tablet).

  • The item must fit into a box measuring 20 inches square: There will be a 20x20x20 box at stores that you'll need to place the item into.

  • One item per customer: Each customer can trade in just one item.

  • GameStop isn't revealing the amount of credit you'll get: Two stores we called said it would probably be $5. GameStop's official account on Instagram is saying only, "Gotta find out."

  • The event happens Dec. 6, in stores only: It's a 1-day event that takes place during regular store hours.

Is it worth it?

This event is clearly open to interpretation. You'll have to show up with a trade-in object and see what you get. For GameStop, it's a way to get curious people in the store and give them credits that they can use to buy things. They've been seeing declines in sales the past several years because gaming is going increasingly digital, so this is a way to encourage foot traffic.

Whether it's worth it to you depends on whether you shop at GameStop. If you already shop there, the credits are essentially free money toward a purchase you'd make anyway. If not, you'll need to weigh whether the credit value is compelling enough to justify a trip and a purchase you wouldn't otherwise make.
