If you’re on the hunt for something screen-free to do on a Saturday, Home Depot Kids Workshops Kits are just what you’re looking for. It’s a fun, interactive activity you can do with your kids once a month. The best part, on top of having fun with your little ones, is that these workshops (and the completed projects your kids take home) are free.

Home Depot usually plans these free in-store events on the first Saturday of every month. These workshops take place in person, and your child will go home with their project, an apron, and a certificate and pin for their crafting achievement. The kits include everything you need, except for a few tools and random materials like glue and paint, which will be provided. You can register for the class online prior to the event, or you can register in person as long as the class isn’t full.

We’ve got all the details you need to know about the Home Depot Kids Workshops — like where to sign up, and when to show up.

Home Depot Kids Workshops are free buildable craft events on the first Saturday of every month.

Since 1997, Home Depot has hosted families for their free Home Depot Kids Workshops. These are fun building activities hosted in Home Depot stores once per month. These Saturday sessions are geared at kids ages 5 to 12, but really anyone can join in regardless of age.

Although the workshops are free, you have to preregister for one of the three, hour-long time slots between 9 a.m. and noon. It’s first-come, first-served, and these popular events fill up quickly.

The next Home Depot Kids Workshop takes place Saturday, April 6, 2024.

Home Depot lists dates for the next three months’ worth of Kids Workshops, but generally speaking you can count on these to happen the first Saturday of every month. You can register for the next workshop right up until the day of the event. The Kids Workshops page on the Home Depot website lists Saturday, April 6, 2024 as the next event, along with the next two months’ dates:

  • April 6, 2024: Lattice Planter

  • May 4, 2024: Blooming Picture Frame

  • June 1, 2024: Grill Gift Card Box

1. Register for Home Depot Kids Workshops ahead of time — you can even buy a kit in advance.

Home Depot Kids Workshops take place from 9 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of the month. To ensure you have a place and a kit, your best bet is to pre-register online and even order your kit ahead of time. On workshop day, these kits are given out on a first-come, first-served basis — and they sell out quickly. Like, sold-out-by-noon quick.

If you strike out at your local stores, then you’ll either have to wait until the following month or order a Kids Workshop Kit from HomeDepot.com, where kits are usually between $5 – $10.

TIP: You’re allowed to register one child for the in-person workshop. If you have more than one kid, you need to register each one individually. And of course, buy each one their own kit.

2. Build toy cars, planters, or mini-games at Home Depot Workshops.

The workshop kits include all of your pieces and instructions, as well as a kids’ orange Home Depot apron.

3. Find out what the Home Depot Kids Workshops Kit includes online.

Home Depot employees don’t find out what each month’s Kids Workshop Kit will contain until the first week of the month. Skip asking a team member and grab a sneak peek at the next few Home Depot Kids Workshop Kits online about midway through the previous month. Kits go on sale a week before the in-person workshop.

For example, if you’re wondering what January 2024 will bring, you can find that information on Home Depot’s website.
