I’ve found that their proposed remedies usually involve lemons, honey and sometimes whiskey depending on who I’m talking to. Although I’d love to propose something different than honey and lemon just to prove them wrong, I can’t. These ingredients are natural healers that also taste great. Honey helps sustain your immune system and has antibacterial properties that assist in healing and soothing sore throats. Lemons, which are packed with vitamin C, weaken cold symptoms and loosen phlegm. With such proven flu fighters, why spend money on cough syrup that mostly just masks symptoms rather than heals? Instead, try making your own cough syrup by following this simple recipe that also includes olive oil, an anti-inflammatory.

Ingredients

1  cup raw honey
1–4 lemons, juiced (more is better; add as much as you can stand)
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Directions

1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk all ingredients together and heat until syrup starts steaming.

2. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

3. Store in a mason jar in the fridge and take 1 tablespoon warmed as needed.

4. Feel better!
