There aren’t tables of free samples at Target like you would find at Costco, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t freebies for the taking.

Here’s how you get free things at Target:

1. Get a free Target gift card when you buy participating products.

Target offers gift card deals every Sunday, usually worth a $5 or $10 Target card when you buy a set number of a certain product. Or sometimes, you can get a larger gift card like $25 when you spend $100 on diapers.

These promos are nearly always advertised in the Target weekly ad. Check KCL each Saturday for the Target weekly deals post, where we match up the best deals from the upcoming week at Target with coupons and rebates!

2. Stack coupons on top of clearance items to get things for free.

One of the easiest ways to find freebies (or even moneymakers) at Target is by stacking coupons on clearance items.

Recently we found Revlon lip products on clearance for under $1.94. We used a $2.00 off coupon from the Sunday paper which made the lip color free. Then, we submitted a $2.00 Ibotta rebate and ended up getting paid $2.00 to buy the item.

TIP: A great way to find free Target deals is by using the filter selection on the top right corner and selecting “freebies.”

3. Trade in electronics for Target gift cards.

Target will take your old electronics — including gaming consoles, phones and video games — and give you a Target gift card. Check the value of your trade-in at Target.com. Then, take your items to the electronics counter to make the trade in store.

By trading in the newest iPhone, according to their website you can get up to a $573 gift card, but for most products, it’s going to be under $100. See everything I’ve ever traded in for gift cards at Target.

4. You can also trade in other gift cards for Target gift cards.

At Target, you can trade in select gift cards for Target gift cards. Of course, the value of the Target gift card will be less than the gift card you’re trading in–that’s how Target makes the trade-in program profitable.

Calculate your trade-in value at TargetTrade-In.com. If the website looks not-quite-like-target.com, that’s because it isn’t. Here’s the trade-in page on Target.com that links out to the trade-in website.

Compare Target’s trade-in value to other gift card resellers. In most cases, you’ll get a little less at Target than you would selling to a site like Gift Card Granny. But, sometimes the convenience is worth it.

6. Receive a free welcome kit with coupons and samples when you sign up for Target baby registry.

When you create a Target baby registry and add one item to your list, you will receive a box of samples and coupons worth over $100! (Between you and me, a hundred bucks is a pretty big stretch, but free is free.)

7. Get free kids toys when you participate in special store events.

Target holds toy events that your kiddos can enjoy for free.

During The Lego Movie 2 event, kids built a toy ship, played games, and got to keep a free vest. Look for toy events in the Target weekly ad, and expect to see them pop up several times a year, depending on toy releases, movie partnerships, and holiday promotions.

8. Find deals that come with a free add-on item.

Target runs sales like “Buy 2 Dove haircare items, get a free Dove Dry Shampoo.” KCL will help you find coupons to use to bring down the cost of the haircare, and you still get the shampoo free.

9. Use your free Starbucks birthday drink at Target.

Did you know when you sign up for the Starbucks rewards program, you get a free coffee on your birthday?

Target is my favorite place to grab my coffee every day, because I save 5% when I pay with my RedCard. But on my birthday, I get my coffee for free. Yeah, yeah. It’s not really a Target freebie. I just happened to be at Target on my birthday. Who’s surprised?

10. Some Super Targets allow a free piece of produce for your little one while you shop.

There is no set policy for this, so it differs by location. You can ask to speak to the leader on duty to deny or confirm whether your store allows it.

11. Get a free coupon worth 15% off anything 14 days after you create a wedding registry.

Two weeks after you create your registry (in store or online), you’ll receive a coupon worth 15% off a single purchase at Target and another at Target.com. The coupon can only be used on items in your registry.

Fine print states: “Coupon cannot be combined with other total transaction discounts. In-store offer not valid on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, Nikon or Canon cameras, Bose, Vitamix, gift cards, tax and Target Mobile Solutions. Online offer not valid on Lego, gift cards, eGiftCards, gift wrap, tax, clearance, entertainment, electronics, shipping and handling charges.”
