Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon? Nope. Not in 2022. There’s a mustard shortage.

Condiments seem to be having a rough year. First, we hear about a Sriracha shortage and a hummus shortage, and now there’s a lack of dijon mustard.

Brown mustard seeds are in short supply, and now people are trying to find their favorite bottle of dijon — or some kind of alternative.

Here’s what you need to know:

Why is there a mustard shortage?

Climate change and the Ukraine-Russia supply chain are to blame.

Canada is the top mustard seed harvester, and their mustard production dropped 28% in 2021 due to extreme hot temperatures and severe droughts.

And the war in Ukraine also affects global mustard supplies, as Russia and Ukraine are both top-5 mustard producers.

Does the dijon mustard shortage affect yellow mustard, too?

Not so far. Yellow mustard is made from white mustard seeds, not brown like dijon, and those crops haven’t suffered the same as brown mustard.

Grocery stores are still well-stocked with yellow mustard, but you’ll already find dijon and spicy mustard supplies low.

How much will dijon mustard cost?

Experts predict massive price hikes for dijon mustard. The price of seeds has skyrocketed, and French media predicts the price of dijon could increase to $1,700 per ton – twice the amount from 2021.

In simple terms, a 7.3-ounce bottle of dijon that costs $3 could soon cost $6.

What is a good dijon mustard alternative during the shortage?

If your local store is out of dijon, lots of mustard fans have shared online that the best (although inferior) replacement is horseradish.

Horseradish and mustard seeds come from the same plant family and give off the same punchy twang as mustard. And while the price of dijon is going up, you can get a 12-oz bottle of Great Value horseradish for just $1.33 at Walmart.
