It’s official: Walmart is everywhere and almost always has the lowest price around.

Love it or hate it, we’ve got the best tips for making the most out of your Walmart experience.

1. Buy groceries online and pick them up at the store for free.

Walmart, you had me at “you don’t have to get your kids out of the car to get your groceries.”

Shop online for groceries, pay online or through the Walmart app, then pick your groceries up at your store. For free.

2. Get $10.00 off your first online grocery order plus $10.00 every time you refer a friend.

I’m not calling this a legit side gig or anything, but $200.00 per year off the price of your groceries isn’t shabby at all either.

First, get your discount. You can always get $10.00 off your first grocery purchase of $50.00 or more. Just sign up through Walmart’s grocery pickup, shop and order your groceries, and use promo code WOWFRESH at checkout.

And after that, refer up to 20 friends per year to get $10.00 per friend credited to your account. I won’t admit how many times I’ve shared my referral code with my Facebook friends.

3. Walmart’s in-store pickup discount gets you an automatic 5-10% off select items, plus they ship free to store.

Different from grocery pickup — has a bunch of items that offer extra savings when you buy online and pick up in-store.

They call it a “pickup discount,” and you can get up to 10% back on qualifying purchases. For example, if you’re buying a $300.00 TV, you can save up to $30.00!

Plus there are three different ways to get your items shipped without paying a dime:

  • Get free 2-day shipping with no membership fee when you spend over $35.00 at (unless you live in Hawaii or Alaska).
  • Get free ship-to-store on thousands of items.
  • Get free same-day pickup on items in stock in your area.

4. See a Freeosk? Grab a free deluxe-sized sample.

You won’t find these in every Walmart, but if you do, you’re lucky. This is no Costco-sized sample — these kiosks have deluxe-sized samples. Here are some of the samples we’ve seen so far:

  • Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers
  • Cuties Mandarin Oranges
  • Full-sized Clif Bars
  • Full-sized Rice Krispies Treats
  • Colgate Optic White Toothpaste

Just download the Freeosk app, and scan you phone or text FREEME to 313131, and enter the unique code at the kiosk to get freebies.

5. Return online orders without standing in line or even talking to a human.

Walmart customer service lines are notorious for being long. It’s a solid NOPE for me.

Recently Walmart introduced Mobile Express Returns. (Everyone is trying to keep up with Amazon!)

This means when you buy something online and you don’t want it, you just get a QR code from your Walmart app, bring your item to the store, skip the line, and scan your QR code on the credit card machine.

Find out more details about Mobile Express Returns here.

6. Some Great Value brand items are actually made by brand names.

It’s an open secret that some Great Value grocery goods are manufactured at the same plants as Conagra Brands.

For example: spices (same as McCormick), canned vegetables (same as Green Giant), and whipped topping (same as Cool Whip).

In addition to Great Value groceries, Walmart has three other generic store brands:

  • Sam’s Choice: “Upscale” or organic groceries
  • Parent’s Choice: Baby products
  • Equate: Personal care, medicine and health products

7. Price tags ending in 0 or 1 are final sale.

Prices ending with a 0 or 1 are final markdown prices at Walmart. Also important: Prices ending with a 7 are full price. Prices ending with a 5 are the first markdown price. Usually these will get marked down again.

Always check inventory levels and buy accordingly. If you find a clearance-tagged item ending in 5 and there are tons of them left, it’s worth it to wait and check when the item is even cheaper.

8. Walmart pays out overage when you use coupons valued at more than an item’s retail price.

If your coupon is worth more than the value of the item you’re buying, Walmart allows you to get “overage,” or the full value of your coupon, even if it’s for more than the item you’re buying.

You can use the “overage” toward other items in your cart, but your cashier can’t hand you the difference back in cash.

For example: If you buy one loaf of Franz bread at $1.97, and your coupon is for $2.00 off one loaf, Walmart gives you $0.03 overage towards your other purchases.

Make even more money stacking rebate apps on top of coupons. Get cash back directly into your PayPal account when you use Ibotta and Checkout 51.

9. Use your Walmart gift cards at Sam’s Club.

You can totally use a Walmart gift card at Sam’s Club stores and online, but if you’re not already a member, they charge an extra 10% on top of your purchase amount.

10. Beware of Walmart “clearance” stickers, because they’re sometimes covering up lower prices.

PSA: A $0.01 markdown is not a “clearance” price, and neither is no markdown at all.

Always peel back and check under the clearance sticker, compare the “clearance” price to the original price, or check Amazon for the regular retail price of your item before you buy, just to make sure you’re not getting bamboozled.

For example, this item was marked at $29.96, but when we peeled back the sticker, we found it was previously $19.00.

11. Look for the best prices on electronics inside the locked glass cases.

High-end electronics clearance is kept behind the glass case or under the counter in the electronics section. Make sure to check this hidden spot especially in the fall as brands are releasing their newer products in time for the holidays.

12. Don’t buy electronics until you’ve scoured the refurbished section on

Get the deepest discounts, especially on electronics, by buying refurbished from (Especially when they still come with the manufacturer’s warranty).

Refurbished electronics are often in perfect condition but were returned for minor issues. Once the manufacturer fixes them up, you save hundreds by buying refurbished electronics and get the same product as buying brand new.

Just type “refurbished” into the search bar on, and scroll through the deals.

I found a refurbished XBox One on for only $299.00. That’s $100 savings over the in-store price of $399.00!

13. Ask your bakery and meat department for a discount on almost-expired items.

There are a few tricks to saving on meat and bread at Walmart. First, check the day-old racks for 50% discounts on bread.

Meat also gets discounted 30-50% when it expires, so try asking your butcher for a discount a day before the expiration date.

If all else fails, look for markdowns in the evening on both of these food items!

Truth: The website isn’t the easiest to navigate, especially when trying to find online clearance.

Instead of trying to hunt down clearance deals one department at a time, just type “clearance” into the search bar at to find all the clearance in one place.

Stores may not always tag the item. You can use the scanner in the app (located to the right of the search bar) to check the price of an item.

16. Get $4.00 generic prescriptions at Walmart Pharmacies.

Next time you need to, ask your doctor to send your prescription to your local Walmart pharmacy, and ask to make sure you’re able to get a generic version. Double-check your prescription to see if it’s on Walmart’s $4.00 generic list before you go.

17. Buy holiday clearance three days after the holiday — it hits 90% off.

Get 50% off holiday clearance the day after the holiday and 90% off three days after.

General rule: If there’s a ton of stock, it’s safe to wait for three days to buy. But if there are only a couple, snatch them up at 50% off.

Walmart sample venders offer more than just a free snack. Grab a bite and check the counter as well, because these coupons are often very high value (think over $1.00) on items that are new to the market.

23. Check all the end-caps for hidden clearance.

End-caps (the end sections of aisles) are the place to check for clearance in each department. Clearance varies wildly by store, but in general, check clearance during the following times:

  • February – March: Heavy coats, winter clothes and boots.
  • Late August – September: Swimsuits, summer decor, pool toys, dorm supplies and school supplies.
  • Late October – early November: Fall decor, summer clothing and shoes, short-sleeved coats and jackets.

24. Buy craft supplies at Walmart and pay 40% less than you’d pay at JOANN Fabrics and Crafts.

Okay, so it’s true that you can get 40% off using the always-available coupon stores like JOANN Fabrics and Crafts, Hobby Lobby and Michaels offers. But at those stores, you’ll just get 40% off one item. Shop at Walmart instead and get 40% off brand-name fabric, yarn, fabric paint, knitting needles, etc.
