With Halloween just around the corner, finding cheap temporary hair color might be as important as your costume. Sure, you can use sidewalk chalk as hair color, or you could dye your hair with Kool-Aid. But sidewalk chalk can be drying and Kool-Aid stains well past just Halloween night.

Luckily, I found a ton of other cheap temporary hair color options that wash out at the end of the night. I found some cream colors specifically made for textured hair, spray colors for something quick, and hair chalk combs that promise a mess-free application. And, for cheapskates like myself, I made sure to compare prices across different retailers to find the lowest price.

Hair Chalk Deals

This is a tried and true method that works really well if you have oily hair. (Chalk can soak up your hair’s natural oils so be careful if you have dry hair.) Just be sure to use hairspray to seal the color or it can fade really quickly after application.

Another pro? It’s the least expensive option when it comes to cheap temporary hair color. You can easily find options below the target price of $0.45 per ounce (though some units are sold in grams rather than ounces).

Spray Temporary Hair Dye

If you want a more subtle color or just a bit of sparkle, a spray is a good choice. Just note that if you have dark hair, you’ll need pre-lightened hair or it won’t work as well.

This category has the most variation when it comes to price. Some smaller bottles are as little as $0.84 per ounce while bigger name brands cost as much as $4.20 per ounce. In general, aim to pay no more than $1.75 per ounce.

Cheap Temporary Hair Color Cream

If you have dry or curly/textured hair, I personally recommend using a color cream. They’re often made with hydrating ingredients and double as styling products or curl gels too. Plus, you don’t need to have pre-lightened hair for the color to show up.

That said, some of the products can get pricey. Always compare price per ounce when determining value since products are sold in different-sized containers. A smaller container may cost less overall, but the price per ounce could be way higher than some bulk options. Try not to pay more than $1.33 per ounce for temporary hair color cream. Otherwise, it might be best to wait until an item goes on sale.
