I love Trader Joe’s because it tends to beat the prices of other stores on things that I may not have coupons for. I trust the Trader Joe’s name and appreciate the ingredients they purposefully leave out of their products.
I frequently find myself wandering the aisles just browsing through all the specialty foods I can’t find anywhere else. I know I can ask to try anything, but sometimes things look undeniably delicious so I just toss them in my cart to take home. I’ve discovered many great foods this way—like Cookie Butter, Chili Lime Chicken Burgers and Corn and Chile Salsa, just to name a few.
1. Talk to the manager
It isn’t often that I come across something I don’t like, but occasionally I do. I remember the phone conversation I had with a store manager; it went something like this:
Me: “I’m not sure if there’s anything that can be done, but I just bought this product, cooked it for my family, and it just didn’t taste right.”
Store Manager: “I’m so sorry to hear that. How about you come in, bring the receipt with you if you can, and we’ll make it right.”
Me: “I’m sorry, but since we cooked it, I can’t really bring it in anymore.”
Store Manager: “That’s fine. We understand that this happens, and we just want to make it right. Even if you cooked it and served it, still just come in and talk to us and we will work it out.”
2. Get a refund
I was shocked. I asked several times if that was really okay. She assured me that it was fine–that even if I had lost the receipt or was unable to bring the food back in, they would work to credit the purchase. When I went back into the store, they offered to replace the product, which honestly I did not want. They would have refunded me the cost of the product, but instead, with the credit of my return, I treated myself to more irresistible Cookie Butter!
3. Let your love for them grow
There was no hassle or back and forth in the store. I felt like I, as a customer, came first. I was assured that their return policy and “customer-comes-first attitude” stems from Trader Joe’s belief in a loyal customer base and that treating customers well is how they consistently serve them and keep them loyal. Well, it worked for me! I buy with assurance that, if on the rare occasion I don’t like something, I can take it back. I’m completely loyal to my local Trader Joe’s now and appreciate everything they do for their customers.
