In June of 2018, we watched in collective sadness as Toys”R”Us finally shuttered their doors for good. Here we are, not even a year later, and it looks like we might get Geoffrey back — and in time for holiday shopping.
A handful of small stores will open for the 2019 holiday season.
The new stores, now owned by Tru Kids, will be open in time for Christmas shopping, though solid details regarding dates and possible locations won’t be announced until June at the earliest.
Tru Kids also owns the rights to Babies”R”Us, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that some of their baby deals make a comeback, too.
The new stores will be 10,000 square feet — less than half their original size.
Typical Toys”R”Us stores in the glory days of the 1980s and 1990s were anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 square feet, and its flagship Herald Square store in Manhattan was a whopping 110,000 square feet.
Still, we’ll take 10,000 feet of Toys”R”Us in place of the Geoffrey’s Toy Chest pop-ups that found themselves inside Kroger stores last Christmas.
No worries if you aren’t near a new store — online shopping is coming, too.
While details are still scarce, a Tru Kids spokesperson said that an e-commerce component is also in the works. That means you should be watching our deals page for the best prices on your favorite Toys”R”Us buys.
