1. Pain Killer
It seems to happen to me every morning. I take a gulp of my hot coffee while it's still as hot as lava and practically burn off my tongue. To ease the sting, I sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar onto the burn. The sugar makes the pain dissipate quickly. I’ve heard you can also suck on a sugar cube – but what do you think I am, a horse?
2. Extra-Dirty Hand Cleaner
Extra cruddy hands — like when my husband's been out tinkering with his VW bug or my toddler's up to her elbows in finger paint — can be cleaned with sugar! Just add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar to a dollop of liquid hand soap and scrub away. Because the sugar is abrasive, it really helps clear away all that muck.
3. Lip Smoother
Rather than buying those expensive lip scrubs, I like to mix caster sugar (which is really just superfine sugar – you can even make your own by grinding up granulated sugar in your food processor for a minute or two) with a bit of olive or jojoba oil. If I'm feeling fancy, I mix in a drop of vanilla or peppermint extract. After massaging the paste onto my kisser, I wipe or lick it off. Okay, who am I kidding? I always lick it off!
4. Grass Stain Remover
To remove the grass stains from my four-year-old's beloved pair of pants, I make a paste by mixing sugar with a bit of water. I gently rub the paste into the stain and let it sit for an hour (or longer if the stain is particularly bad). After a normal wash in the washing machine, the stain vanishes!
5. Banana Body Scrub
For an extra-moisturizing scrub, mix together 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of olive oil and one mashed extra-ripe banana. I like to massage the scrub onto my legs and elbows, but it can be used almost anywhere you get dry skin. After a thorough rinse in the shower, my skin is super soft and I smell like banana bread!
6. Coffee & Spice Grinder Cleaner
Tired of grubby, clogged grinding blades in your coffee or spice grinder? For a quick remedy, pulverize ½ cup of sugar in your grinder and then empty. Not only does the sugar help clean the blades, it deodorizes the inside of the grinder.
7. Lipstick Life Extender
After applying your favorite lipstick, sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar on top. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and then carefully lick it off. Sugar sets your lipstick and helps it last longer. Plus it tastes a lot better than most of those creepy makeup setting sprays.
8. Dessert Freshener
Store your favorite cookies or cake in an airtight container along with a couple of sugar cubes. Because sugar inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold, it may keep your favorite desserts fresher for longer.
